Half moons returning!!

I have been taking pictures of my fingernails since April 2017 due to the ridges, beading and lack of half moons. I have no idea how long they have been missing since i wasnt checking prior to starting to research my issues and read lack of moons could be a sign of b12 deficiency.

I have had levels as low as 169. I took tablets for 30 months!! Still felt seriously crappy. I got my first weekly injection 5-22-17. I had many symptoms improve during the first six or so weeks of injections. After 9 injections and being frustrated by no further improvement (tested b12 level was 814, seventeen days after 9th injection) i basically got into an arguement with my doctor, when i esentially demanded being tested for h pylori. I was positive and took the medication.

After an additional 9, almost weekly, injections, along with daily multi (has b9), magnesium, vit C, and trying to eat potassium rich foods i was frustrated by still having no further improvement. My last b12 injection was on 10-16-17. I wanted to stop getting injections for month to test my level again.

I was not yet able to retest h pylori (need to wait 8 weeks) to see if h pylori was gone or not. After researching some more with a focus of starting fresh, concerning remaining symptoms, general fatigue, brain fog, concentration issues, irritability (from fatigue and brain fog, i think) i decided i needed to seriously consider iron.

Started taking taking ferros sulfate 325 mg/65 mg elemental iron 3X daily on 10-27-17. I felt somewhat better the next day which i figured was placebo effect. 5 days later half moon appeared on left index finger. As of today, 11-7-17, it is still there and i can see the begining of half moons on right index and middle fingers. I also have 5- 10X as much energy. Still not even close to 100% (I used to jog 3 miles 3-5X weekly) but considering that i recently used to sit or lay around all day and dread even having to go to the grocery store, this is awesome.

Since starting iron, i have painted 2 rooms, and thoughly cleaned my kitchen (scrubbed the walls, floors, counters, oven, refigerator) for 7 hours, three days ago. I was vey tired but in a good way.

Please dont put yourself through months of needless additional lingering symptoms. Monitor your folate AND IRON when getting b12 injections.

That's an interesting read and great account of your 'moons' progress. I read a few weeks back about moons being a sign for B12 deficiency. As a male I've never paid any attention to my nails but having read that I notice I only have 1 moon across my 8 fingernails and moons on both thumbs. I might follow your lead and start a diary too. Glad things are improving for you

Information on iron deficiency. Please carefully read, in event of inflamation, ferritin levels may test falsely high.

Conversely i have also read that in the event of inflamation, ferritin needs to be above 100, as the body is trying to segregate iron therefore lower levels are not available.

I have also been taking similar to you, for a couple of years which helped, but I have felt a lot better recently after taking larger doses of iron. My doctor checked my levels and is happy for me to continue with the large doses of iron.

Interesting....I never even knew about lack of half moons being a sign...I have only small ones on thumbs and none on fingers! 👍

Just looked at my fingers and I have a slight bit of a half moon on my right thumb but other fingers and left thumb are blank.

Never noticed before that I don't have half moons.

My half moons disappeared and I have ridged fingernails, very thin and wavy at the edge. I am now starting to see small half moons on my thumb nails, ridges are looking better and my pale nails are turning pink.

Interesting, I only have one tiny half moon on my right thumb. My folate, B12 and iron are all within range but at the lower end of „normal“.

That is brilliant and anything like me, I don't enjoy cleaning but miss having a clean house as absolutely pooped if I do too much. Onwards and upwards for you and so amazing that your half moons have come back so quickly.
