Can taking iron and vitamin d affect b12 levels. I have all symptoms of b12 deficiency and levels went up slightly to take me over 200 since took iron. Have I got a case to put to my gp?

Any help appreciated.

I can not imagine iron and vit D reducing a need for B12 treatment, if that was so every one could try only taking iron and vit D instead of having to have B12 jabs...sorry I can not be of more help, Marre.

Thanks I'm just trying to make sense of why b12 went from 150 to 230 and took no supplements. The only thing I have took was ferrous sulphate and vit d tablets. My doctor been left with a copy of new guidelines as hoping that even though my level

Increased I'm still fitting all symptoms of b12 deficiency

My Daughter was put on iron tabs before she got B12 treatment by injections years ago and high prescription B vits to sort out iron def and B12 def, her iron def was sorted with tablets, no change in her low (then 134) serum B12, so iron tabs (and high doses B12 tabs) did not alter her serum B12. I think the guidelines are your best bet, and if no further testing then treatment should be offered, but who knows, hoping for you your GP gets you further testing and or treatment soon,

Kind regards,

Marre.

Thanks Marre. Am I right in that due to new guidelines gp has no choice but to request more tests or trial injections if fitting all symptoms of b12 . I asked about active b12 but said did not do that. She understood results still low and said would take a good good at everything before committing to trial injections.

Hi Leanneta ,

A GP can do what ever he/she thinks is right for the person, and guidelines are guidelines, so he/she does not have to follow them, its not law, but it would seem wise to follow them. I hope for you you get more tests so you will get a conclusive diagnosis and the right treatment that is not going to be we try this and then we change to that. Far better to get the diagnosis first.

Wishing you luck! Marre.

Thanks Marre, my gp referring me to Hosp for further tests as said because level is now over 200 does not want to diagnose straight away with out ruling everything out. Calcium blood tests were mentioned. Any idea what these are?

Hi Leanneta,

I suppose further testing is good, but hopefully he/she also investigates testing further re B12 def/ active B12/ MMA. Calcium testing is done for reasons given see this link:

I hope you are going to get somewhere soon!

Kind regards,

Marre.
