Kidney stone stent ‘attacks’

Hi, bit worried so hopefully someone can help..

I’ve had kidney stones for 3 years, it’s took a lot of trouble and even legal battles to get the NHS to help with them as they’ve been known to cause a lot of pain on certain days and I just wanted them out. This week I had an operation to remove a 7mm stone, the operation was unsuccessful so instead, they placed a stent to widen my insides so they can get them out next time..

Now i was told that i’d be more uncomfortable with the stent than what I am just with the stones- urinating is painful as my bladder seems to go into a spasm every time, but yesterday I had what I can only describe at this point as an attack..

For about 15 mins, my whole back, sides and legs were contracting and i honestly have never ever felt pain like it, it was like my kidney/bladder was about to explode. During this episode i was shaking/shivering, basically went into shock begging my brother to call an ambulance, to which they responded i need to go an ANE, which was impossible at the time as I couldn’t move.

After that, the pain tapered off within another 15 minutes, and that was it for another hour, then it started to happen again, this time lasting for about 25 minutes, my brother begging for them to send an ambulance and me literally curled up, close to passing out in pain sounding like I'm in labour.

Since the second time, i haven’t had it again thank god, but now when i go toilet it’s hurting a lot more in my front right and i have a constant feeling in my lower back/bum, like a deep feeling of needing a number 2…

My questions are and was too 111 but never really got an answer:

Does this sound like a stone trying to pass through the stent?

Is any of this sounding concerning considering i had this operation on Monday?

Is there anything I can take or do to ease the pain of an ‘’attack’’?

Happy to answer anything more and any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

J

Hello Snoopysworld. I am appalled at what I have just read. Firstly I have never heard of a kidney stone removal being unsuccessful as I always thought they blasted the stone to tiny pieces and they were then able to pass.

Secondly I thought Stents were for heart and blocked artery problems.I have never heard of one being placed in a kidney. However I am not a Doctor so what would I know. It just doesn't sound right somehow.

Are you getting adequate pain relief and if not, why not. I have passed a kidney stone and know that anything associated with the Kidneys is the pain from Hell. You have a perfect right to send a written complaint to the Head of the Hospital setting out what has happened to you and also mentioning your lack of adequate pain relief. How long are they going to leave you in this state. The Doctors who operated on you should be held to account for your present state of health. But good luck with all of this as sometimes it seems to me that Doctors have lost all empathy with their patients.

Please let me know how you are, I will be thinking of you. God Bless and help you. Lauree.
