Have you had physio for the injury? Ankles can take a very long time to heal

Hi Dianne, I understand completely what you are dealing with as I injured my foot 3.5 years ago and suffered with terrible nerve pain around the outside edge of the foot and top of foot. It lasted about 9 months and I rubbed Frankincense oil and any kind of oil that treats nerve pain which you can get from health shops, on the foot everyday which I think helped to ease the pain. It really is just time and patience. The pain only happened when I stood up and walked luckily so I managed to sleep at night. The nerve pain does go away eventually. I have ended up with Achilles Tendonopathy pain and pain when I walk now as I was walking so badly after the accident so my advice is to try and rest it as much as possible, make sure you walk correctly and balance that with physio therapy for the ankle and leg as you don't want to end up with muscle weakness from lack of exercise. You must get the correct advice from health professionals right from the start in order to avoid doing further damage.

I tried to get medical advice for my ankle injury over 2 years ago I am still waiting. I broke my ankle and it was never put in a cast or air and i am still in considerable pain and have developed CRPS because of the lack of care. I was never offered physiotherapy and told to do the RICE method which really didn't help on a broke foot. At present i am still waiting for an appointment at Salford hospital near Manchester. They sent the appointment to the wrong address having told them my new address and now I have to wait even longer.

I was treated the same way by my GP who did nothing when I first told her what happened. As a result I also developed CRPS from lack of interest from the doctors. The whole experience has left me really confused about why they aren't concerned about patients getting CRPS after injuries. She said I would be fine and I got worse over the months. Make sure you don't get stressed as that makes everything worse. I have just spent 3 weeks at a pain clinic to desensitized my nervous system which is the main cause of CRPS. Practice anything that keeps you calm and fight for the right physio treatment.

Pay for it if you can't get it on NHS

Hi Dianne,

Have you heard of CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)? In a nutshell, we get an injury to one of our 4 limbs, and then you end up with horrific nerve pain after the original injury is long gone (you may feel pins & needles/numbness, or even both burning & freezing at exactly the same time).

There is a clinic at the RUH in Bath who can assess for it, but some consultants in other areas (such as a spinal consultant) can recognise it & refer you to get diagnosed.

Are is the affected foot a different temperature to the other foot (regardless of it being warmer or colder)? Are your ankles different colours (again, regardless of the affected ankle being more pale, or much darker than the unaffected foot)?

Have you had an MRI?

It can be difficult to diagnose for clinicians who have no experience in it, but Google search for CRPS & the Budapest diagnostic criteria.

You should be able to recognise whether those criteria sound pretty much exactly what you are experiencing, or if it sounds nothing like what you are experiencing, then at least you can close down that avenue of exploration.

How long his the pain been there altogether?

If I can recommend a suitable pathway for you to ask to be invested, I will do.

Best of luck!

Hiya, You mention that your toes are curling down. This is quite common and sometimes called hammer toes or talons.

You can get pads that go under the toes to help relieve the pain in your toes, they are available from Chemists or Amazon.

Hope this helps, keep fighting.

in reply to Robto

Hi Ive tried tape, what are the pads called please

Good Morning, They are called hammer toe pads, straighteners, correctors, cushions, or splints. Hope that helps. Stay strong. x
