Has anyone ever had any problems with their AST or ALt levels on their liver? Normal is between 5-50 but mine shot up to over 500 (doctor is aware, then it went down to 300 something now it’s on 126 so slowly going down.. my GP said that was why I was getting bad chest pains due to my liver being inflamed.. has anyone else has this and what did you do to make it go back down again?

Are you taking a medication that is causing your liver levels? Do you have a health condition that could cause those levels?

What medications can cause increased liver enzyme tests (AST and ALT) levels?

A variety of medications can cause abnormal liver enzymes levels in some individuals.

Examples of some of the common medications with potential liver toxicity include:

Pain relief medications such as:

aspirin,

acetaminophen (Tylenol and others),

ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin),

naproxen (Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Aleve),

diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, Voltaren-XR), and

phenylbutazone (Butazolidine)

Anti-seizure medications such as:

phenytoin (Dilantin),

valproic acid (Depakote, Depakote ER, Depakene, Depacon),

carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equertro), and

phenobarbital

Antibiotics such as:

tetracyclines, (for example, tetracycline [Achromycin])

sulfonamides,

isoniazid (INH) (Nydrazid, Laniazid)

sulfamethoxazole (Gantanol),

trimethoprim (Trimpex; Proloprim, Primsol)

nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin; Furadantin; Macrobid),

fluconazole (Diflucan ) and some other anti-fungals, etc.

Oh in that case yes, I take naproxen sometimes for when I have the chest pains (which is caused by my liver) but the pain is awful so I can’t not take it 😳😭

What medications can cause increased liver enzyme tests (AST and ALT)? (continued)

Cholesterol lowering drugs such as statins:

lovastatin (Mevacor, Altocor),

pravastatin (Pravachol),

atorvastatin (Lipitor),

fluvastatin (Lescol),

simvastatin (Zocor),

rosuvastatin (Crestor), and

niacin

Cardiovascular drugs such as:

amiodarone (Cordarone),

hydralazine (Apresoline)

quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex), etc.

Other drugs

Antidepressant drugs of the tricyclic type

With drug-induced liver enzyme abnormalities, the enzymes usually normalize weeks to months after stopping the medications. Typically, the physician will want to monitor the patient's liver enzymes over time to confirm that the values are normalizing.

Your doctor needs to find out what and why your liver levels are so high and if It were me I would be on the phone with him/her constantly until he/she sent me to a doctor that specializes in liver disease.

I actually have stage 4 liver fibrosis. After tons of testing, the specialist said it’s from being on opioids for 12 years. I was on very high doses of 3 different pain medication. I’m only 40 years old and it’s irreversible. My AST and ALT numbers changed every time. It’s been up in the 900’s then down in the 100’s. So be very careful with what medications you take and how long you take them. My diagnosis is medicine induced liver fibrosis.

There are many causes of elevated liver enzymes. Primary inflammation of the liver as can be caused by Hepatitis B and C, Pancreatitis, Gallstones, and other conditions must be ruled out. Alcohol and numerous meds such as acetominophin need to be considered. Please make sure that your doctor makes a definitive diagnosis or refers you to a consultant who can. Best of luck getting this sorted property.

You could ask your Dr for an ultrasound on your liver and motherhood to be done, I've not long found out that I have a fatty liver and that it's causing my liver function treats to be high as well as having a virus that causes the tests to be abnormal
