Sciatica update...

Morning everybody...hope you are feeling a lot better, and in less pain.

I had an operation on my L5/L4 bulging disc yesterday ( had to go private in the end, nhs taking too long I could see it going into next year, before anything could be done....and I just couldn’t wait any longer, holidays were cancelled, life was on hold ☹️

I can say after he op, I am feeling great ( hope it’s not just the pain killers) I go home today :-)). I have been sooo well looked after.

No more gardening now for me...it was that that started this sciatica off for me.

Love to everyone who has given me support on here over the last few months.... ❤️❤️😊 XxxX

Can I ask what op did you have?

Can’t remember the official words, but had the bulging disc shaved off, that was pressing on sciatic nerve 😊

The Very Best Wishes for your recovery - and you're right about gardening down low, but you can get Kits for Wheelchair Gardening which would get your "green-fingers" back again.

I must admit a "spasm" (I'm long past twinges !) of jealousy! I'm L4, L5 & S1, with Sciatica in both sides !

Unfortunately I'm told the risk of doing "More Damage - like making you paraplegic (I think it was that - so Long ago now and Fibro doesn't help the ol rememberer!)

Anyway, basically the Risks outweighed the possible benefits, so off I was sent !

So to hear someone has gone through it and out the other side, with no side effects or bad sh!t, is an inspiration for what my future may still hold, so Thanks for that 👍

You take it slow and steady, don't let tiny twinges and little pains get in your way ! As I am sure you've been told, and don't need me to confirm it, your body's going to be be well out of sorts Internally (but not Eternally Now 😉) and it's not a Short road back to Fully Fit, but I hope you'll soon be back to "Who" you were before All This !

Please keep taking time to keep us All informed as to your recovery etc.

Its - whatever the opposite of rubbing salt in wounds - actually encouraging to hear a recovery story now and then. There's more than enough Sad Tales, so your good news lifts everyone👏

So Day by Day, Stronger for Longer and by next Summer you'll only have a Bad Memory of your time outside of your normal life.

As Mr.Spock says: "Live Long and Prosper"🖖

Oh Pod, how do you manage with sciatica both side! So sorry they cannot operate again. I hope you have pain relief, I was/am taking Pregabalin, but will start to come off in a couple of weeks, it never helped with the pain in walking. I really hope you have something.

I will definitely be taking it slowly, I cannot undo all the good work my surgeon has done in me. Not sure about gardening again though,...but maybe a little light pruning....maybe.

I will keep you all posted....and hope to hear how Kels ? Is doing.

❤️ Yvette

It's really nice to read people's Good News Stories, and I truly hope and believe that you will just get Better & Better!

I'm sure I speak for Everyone who is going through the same thing, one way or another, that you Deserve to be Better and get Stronger and more Confident in your "new" Back !

Just 1 favour is asked - Please Don't Ever come back to say:

"It all went pear-shaped ! I was painting my room and felt a bad twinge when moving the couch, but when I tried pulling up the carpet !...... and then the Doctor said: ....... !"

We've Enough Bad Luck/Bad News Stories, without "returnees" to the fold !

So, please, only regular updates of how you're getting on to help Inspire those who are waiting for the same/similar Ops. Called variously:

healthline.com › health........

Discectomy is the most common surgery used for herniated disc in the lumbar region. In this procedure, the portion of the disc that is causing the pressure on your nerve root is removed. In some cases, the entire disc is removed.

nhs.uk › ...........

Lumbar decompression surgery - How it's performed - NHS.

}A discectomy is carried out to release the pressure on your spinal nerves caused by a bulging or slipped disc ..........

And after a while you'll be able to stop, as more people get the same Ops. and tell their recovery Stories.

So, the Very Best of Luck in your Recovery. Take it Slow and Easy and Live your Life as you want.

1 more thing - Shout at Anyone you ever see abusing the Only Spine they'll ever have ! Ask Them if they want to see Your Scar all down your Back (Yes, we know you don't!😉) Get their attention by Telling them they might Cripple themselves for life if they Don't Stop !

Oh, - have a quick look round! They Do Not Appreciate Advice like that at a Gymnastics Event !!😳 🤭

Thank you for the quick reply.

I've never been a "candidate" for Surgery (no matter How Many Votes I got !)

No, I'm in the Category of,

"The Chances are an Operation to remove the Discs, will end up with you even Worse off, because of their positioning.

But ! If you Ever lose control of your Bladder or Bowels, Come straight in. Use the Ambulance Service and tell them what's happening and we need a Spinal Surgery Team waiting! OK ? Well, thanks for coming in, Mr. ah.. Mr. (page turns back) Ah, POD, Yes! Mr.POD - funny name that ! Hard to forget !"

And All I can think is, "Oh Crap ! My possible Surgeon's got Alzheimer's or something !"

Anyway, it's more than just 1 or 2 things unfortunately, so I just go along day to day, take me Meds, stay in bed if it's a "Bad" day, get up if it's Sunny and wait and see if my "Wee Guyz" - our 3 wee Grandsons, who could make a Lemon & Lime turn Sweet !

Anyway, you concentrate on you and get a little better every day, in every way !

hope you never get to the point of fusion surgery three levels in lumbar with cages replacing the disc then pedicle screws and rods . Going through nearly nine hours on the table nearly a whole year to walk again and then be in just as much or worse pain than you started with its a bummer . Pain is pain whatever you are unfortunate enough to have spinal pain is a fuxxxx most people don't understand why you are miserable and don't understand your pain . It is nice to hear people getting through the other side trims are much more successful fusion on the other hand is not so great I do pity people that have reached that point having failed spinal surgery . Sciatica is bloody miserable I was hoping to get rid of mine but it came back even worse the testicle pain is a swine but I will cope with that as long as the old mon still works Jesus that's a real worry that would be the final straw . Try a good quality tens for the leg pain it does appear to do something . Lloyds chemist sold a great one the pads heated up to and that helps . All the best Neil

Great news!

Hi Yvette,

I have the same problem, do you mind saying how much the operation cost? I’ve been waiting so long but not sure if I can afford to go private.

I’m so pleased for you x

Yvette49 profile image
Yvette49 in reply toChezza49

Hi chezza, I am not 100% sure as hubby doesn’t want me to worry too much....one bill I saw was £8000 that was for a consultation fee and the op, all in with anaesthetist etc. There is another consultation fee to pay, £250.

As you say the wait with nhs was taking too long for me.

Good luck Chezza hope you can work something out.... 🤗

Hi Yvette

I’m pleased your op went well has it relieved your leg and back pain? I saw a private consultant last weekend my L5/L4 bulging discs off which one is pressing on a nerve, my own go said I needed an op but the consultant has said they can shave the disc and do something to my ligaments but it would only relieve the leg pain and not the back pain so as it’s my back pain that’s the worst I chose not to have the op x

Yvette49 profile image
Yvette49 in reply toKarengregory

Hi...my bulging disc was pressing on sciatic nerve causing all the pain down leg, and unable to stand/walk for more than 2 mins. Since op. No pain in leg, and I can walk again. Lower back was aching at times before, seems ok at moment.

I wish you luck Karen X

Karengregory profile image
Karengregory in reply toYvette49

Hi, that’s what mine are doing but I’m in pain 24/7 with fibro and oa but it’s the pain in my back that bothers me more and nothing has relieved it yet. Did you get numbness down your leg too? xx

Yvette49 profile image
Yvette49 in reply toKarengregory

I was too :-(

Is it your lower back ? My lower back pain, come from my arthritis.

No pain killers were touching the leg pain..(.yes I was beginning to get numbness knee down to foot) I was on Tramadol, didn’t touch it, I am hoping to start weening off of Pregabalin soon.

Xx

Glad the surgery went well, hoping you continue to feel great. I had a L5S1 fusion surgery 4 years ago, it was one of the best decisions I have made. It relieved alot of my pain, and I was able to get better rest. Take care of yourself and do exactly what your surgeon says even if you feel you can do more. Rest helps your body to heal faster.

Yvette49 profile image
Yvette49 in reply toIluvgardening

Thanks.....yes, because suddenly, no pain, you feel you could do more. But I am being strict with myself, I don’t want to undo the good work. 👍

Iluvgardening too....but no more, it was raking that did this :-(

Yes, I understand I love working in the garden and flower beds, but I have to limit myself. These bodies just can't take it😑its unfair, but yes you have the right mindset, don't undo the good, it is good to be strict! We just have to find a different hobby we love😊one that isn't so hard on us.
