Been to the doctors tonight and he has confirmed I have gout (left foot) dam painful been like it since last Thursday, put me on colchicine 500 micro-gram 2 3 times a day no more than 12 in a day and can take ibuprofen 400 mg 1 x 3 times a day.
Then bloods to be done in a couple of weeks, is this the norm? told me to take a week or two from work, but I can drive and sit down at work and have a cushion on my PC tower to keep my leg elevated, I cant afford time off work had enough time off last time when I had chemo and operation, they don't seem to realise that we have bills coming in and need to be paid for, I would love the time off.
Rant over and thanks guys any tips to get rid of this quicker

Hi there, the treatment suggested is right on target. It is difficult to take time off work and rest the foot. My Gp made me walk over to collect a prescription then I had a reaction to the Colchicine. Mines in the left foot. The blood test is to check your uric acids are back to normal and you may have to take allupurinol to prevent flare ups. If you can tolerate the tablets then you may be able to avoid flareups. Diet is important too no foods with high purines, they usually give you a list but you can find one on the NHS website. Remember this arthritis can effect more than just your big toe as it is a systemic type like Rheumatoid & lupus. Cherry juice is good to lower uric acid levels, they do one at most big supermarkets ,go for the sugar free one and it is nice with ice. Nothing more I can say to help, take care
Hey Katie, thanks for your advice I may get the cherry drink (sugar free ) and see how that goes, I really hope this is the first and the last time I get it, I think I would have gone mad and if I had to go to A&E I would have asked them to amputate my toe, it got that bad, my chemist was great as well and gave me 400Mg ibuprofen and they started to ease it pretty quick, a sprain or break would have been less painful, am sure.
Unsure about the diet foods though, I think am eating pretty healthy, salads, fish (Tuna/Cod) wholemeal bread, hate white bread I can taste the bleach in white bread (am not racist) lol
Hi again, wholemeal bread is a no no on low purine diet I used to eat whole meal all the time now I do some white some wholemeal, I like soya bread too. To avoid future attacks try to keep well hydrated, exercise moderately no gym work outs as they make you urine more cocentrated making the uric acids more concentrated too. There are lots of drugs that can cause gout too so check them, duiretics and heart tablets are one of the worst but unfortunately some people have to take these drugs and suffer the gout in order to live (: and you are right some broken bones are not as painful as gout, it depends on how bad the flare up is. Keep that foot rested and with the tablets you should be over the flareup soon. Best Wishes
Hey Katie, again appreciate your updates, bit of a nightmare today, I had to go to the loo about 9 times this afternoon, only just making it in time, I called my pharmacist and he told me to immediately not to take anymore and call the GP, well, Friday afternoon, I couldn't get past the option 2 to speak to someone so had to leave it, I have text the pharmacist this afternoon and he has asked me to come down and see him tomorrow and we would try and sort something out, I trust him more than the GP at the moment, so will let you know how I get on, I hope he can sort something out, have to say it has eased a great deal now and can now wobble up the stairs easier now, with the bread, am going to have a look at the soya bread, I cannot go back to white as I can honestly taste the bleach they put in it, again appreciate your tips etc.
Obviously you are like me the pills don't suit , however I found after the pills had upset my stomach the gout pain lessened, hope the chemist can help. My chemist where sarcastic as it was gout .Must go I have a busy day today hope things improve for you soon . It can take several weeks to get back to normal after a flare up. Best wishes
Hi Katie, agreed, what a horrible day I had yesterday, not going into details but running to the loo about 9 times at work and then same at home in the evening, doesn't feel to bad this morning but am going careful, saying that I have made a chili carne carne for this evening and I am going to have a glass of wine, going to see Pesh my pharmacy this afternoon so hopefully he can sort something
Hi sounds like you plan a nice meal & wine to relax, don't want to dishearten you but chilli has a no no ingredient, the beans. But hey life is too short, why shouldn't we have a bit of our favorite now & then. Enjoy. Hope the chemist found a suitable alternative for your gout symptoms.
Hi Katie, and it was lovely, the best I have made yet, I didn't have the wine sadly, I forgot about it but hey, here's to another healthy meal and a wine
Now that wasn't a good idea forgetting the wine, at least the wine deadens the pain and relaxes the muscles. Glad to here you enjoyed the Chilli though. I had a chicken Paella weight watchers style did not do anything for the taste buds, but the pheswari naan I had with it did taste better.:) Take care
My husband suffers from gout too, also in his left foot. Yes they check the Uric acid in your blood. The first flare up you have right now is often the most painful. You may never have one again or you may have more. My husband had one and then several more. They wanted to put him on allopurinol but he refused as it is usually for life. He watched his diet and drinks every day 2 to 3 litres of water and never leaves the house without water. It went away for about 15 years but flared up over Christmas and it has been rumbling on and off a bit since. They again mentioned allopurinol but he refused and manages it so far with colchicine. He finds dehydration and stress are the worst for flare ups. He never took time of work as he can’t afford too and if you have a sitting job you should be fine if you can put your leg up.
Thanks Emma, appreciate that, I have noticed over the last several weeks I have been suffering from dehydration even though I am drinking about 4 ltrs water in the morning and the same in the afternoon, with coffees a cup of tea when I get home from work and I work in an office and my manager put a cushion on my pc tower so I can put my foot up, little uncomfortable sometimes as I do have to stand a few times a day doing my dictator part of the job lol
Hey Kenster1, its horrible, I would have rather sprained my ankle than this, I will do it the GP says at the moment and then look into best drugs, am going to be sneaky on this but I get my prescriptions free due to cancer, doesn't mean I can take the mickey as I hate taking drugs of any sort as it is
