Any tips on how to get rid of the pain??

Hi!

I’m a 16 year old girl with chronic pain in my knees. I’m going to try to describe everything for you briefly.

(The question is at the bottom, there’s no need to read my “journal” for answering it).

It all started in February 2016 (I didn’t have an activity atm) when I felt something hurting inside my knees. It was like a headache, but in my knees. I ignored it and the pain went away just a few days after.

In May 2016 my left knee went out of it’s joint. The ambulance personnel fixed it after about 1 hour. They called us back and said that they had felt something was wrong while fixing it, so I was of to the hospital. They did an x-ray of my knee and found nothing.

After that I was in and out of the hospital for months because of acute pain in my knees.

I started physical therapy for my knees, which included the gym 4 times a week.

In October 2017 my doctor sent me to another hospital where they did an MRI (I thinks that’s what they call it, you know the tunnel thingy).

In December 2017 I received a call from the hospital that they wanted to book a surgery for my left knee because they had found something and didn’t know what it was. I met the surgeon and he said that the surgery would take place in the spring of 2018. (Which never happened btw).

In July 2018 I stopped with physical therapy, because I was sick and tired of not getting better, so I started play football (soccer). I know it’s not the best for your knees, but I gave up.

I’m still playing football today, and my knees hurts like hell 24/7 (you know I’m stubborn, I rather feel the pain than stop playing football). Somedays my knees moves from it’s joints, but they are not getting stuck as they were in 2016.

To point out: I also have hyper mobility, that’s both cool and scary.

I think I may have something called JHS (Joint Hypermobility Syndrome), but I don’t know.

I just wanna know if someone have any tips on how to feel less pain, just for an hour or so, anything will do just fine. Right now I’m kinda limited. I can’t run or walk long distances without a prosthetic to keep my knees in place. I’m not allowed to lay in a certain way just to prevent anything from happening. And yes, I lay down when I sleep, please imagine that. I never get enough sleep, so somedays I can’t even go to school. Just a heads up: I can’t do yoga, but I would really appreciate any tips!❤️ (my English isn’t the best, but I hope you understand anyways). And the picture with a red circle is a mark I got after the incident in 2016.

I’m sorry your knee has been in so much pain for so long. Everyone is different but for me what helps my knee pain is foot reflexology massage (it sounds weird I know), warm salt baths, sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees. When I get really down about it, it’s helped me to have a friend that hug me and just let me cry hard for a bit. I don’t know if these things will help you but I’m glad you’re here and reaching out.

You have to learn to move differently so that stresses are applied in the right places instead of stresses being applied in all the places that do not like it. Moving differently is a long journey. It is difficult. You have to stop doing what you did before and do something new. That is double the mental effect that you are normally used to engaging in.

Try Alexander Technique.

Sorry to hear this. The first thing you need to do is get a firm diagnosis, so you will need to see a consultant. Once you get this then medical advice should be able to help you. It might just be a case of doing exercises to strengthen the muscles round the knee. I would imagine hot and cold compresses would also help.

I would not try anything like alternative therapy until you know exactly what the problem is as you don't want to run the risk of making it worse. x

Look on the Ehlers-Danlos support group on healthy unlocked.

If you have JHS then that comes with chronic pain unfortunately and you need a good physio regime.

The Ehlers-Danlos support site is very informative.

I meant healthunlocked....sorry!

Sorry to hear about your pain. When my knees flare up I elevate my legs and use ice packs, they take the edge off the pain

I use physio tape .. gives support to knees but you can leave it on for days ☺ then heat patches or pads I stick mine on knees and volt or older gel .. do that first .. and work out what movement is the worst trigger.😊good luck

I mean voltorol gel .like ibuprofen gel but stronger

If you are in the UK you can see your GP for a diagnosis of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos. (JHS doesn't exist as a diagnoses anymore, it has been taken over by hEDS or Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder) GPs in the UK (and in other countries) can use the Royal College of GP's EDS toolkit to make a diagnoses. It does look like that may be what is causing the problems with your knee, but we can't make a diagnoses here, and there are other connective tissue disorders as well to eliminate.

You need to go and see your GP to be referred to a rheumatologist. There are a number of conditions which fall under the hypermobility spectrum. All the female members of my wife's family have hyper mobility to some degree. From memory there are 8 types. But you need a definitive diagnosis. My daughter as joint hyper mobility and as many problems with knees hips etc. She as been told not to do yoga or show off by putting her leg behind her head etc as this can cause great damage to the joint by over extending the soft tissue around her joints. There are different degrees of hyper mobility. A lot of people have few or any problems. You are still very young and I feel the hyper mobility my be your main problem. I feel you may need specialist advice to help prevent joints becoming painful which in many ways does not help you now but may stop pain in the future.

Also pain management and specialist physiotherapy x
