Damaged my knee in late Feb by kneeling on ice/snow and have suffered with constant pain since, had X-ray, MRI, Physio, et al but to date it’s no better. Currently taking the usual cocktail of pain relief, NSAIDS etc but only suppressing symptoms. How long should this last without intervention

Physio is one size fits all so not surprised it is not effective. MRI of knee would have picked up damage. So no damage present.

You say: "late February". You have been on pain killers that long! If you come off the pain killers you must come off them slowly. You have probably become addicted to the pain killers (may or may not be accurate).

See an Alexander Teacher and a sports therapist. Something is wrong, but without seeing how you move no one can comment. Suspicion you are applying stress to the wrong part of the knee resulting in pain. This is why suggest sports therapist. Alexander Teacher can help you correct faulty movement patterns causing pain.

You need people to help you investigate the problem.

Pain killers in the long run will damage injured structures.

I was told there are ‘microfractures’ of the femoral bone end, I fairly crunched it helping someone with a flooding issue, I’m aware of danger of painkillers having had three hip replacements on left leg and two incidents of withdrawal symptoms so being very careful of use.

I don’t seem to be getting anywhere with recovery but differing opinions of what is best treatment

Thanks for the reply. I am having a guess some of your muscles have over contracted and need stretching out. This you need to investigate. When muscles go into over contraction they become painful and need lengthening out - painful process that can take months.

You need the advice of a sports therapist. And could need several sessions of possibly painful massage.

I could be wrong. Only investigation by someone who knows by feel if your muscles are okay or not. Over contracted muscles will not show up on an MRI scan unless they are pulling something out of alignment and even then the misalignment could be assumed to be how you entered the MRI scanner.

Hope I have been helpful.

I have had McTimony chiropractic treatment for an injury since 1994 on the NHS. Every now and again I would have strange bone pains near joints. The chiropractor demonstrated to me that the strange bone pains were muscles in contraction that were pulling on a bone area. The chiropractor removed the bone pain.

Early this year I smashed my knee cap into the side of a workshop table. It hurt a lot at the time. It took several months before discomfort in the knee cap vanished. The chiropractor did some work on the leg muscles which helped reduce the discomfort.

All the best.

Micro fractures, if there is no displacement, should heal over time.
