Most pain medications have constipation as a side effect as they slow the passage of food through the bowel. A good diet and a bit of help from something like Laxido should remedy any problems.

Amitriptyline or Nortriptyline seems to be effective for nerve pain. But there are side effects.

If your sciatica is long standing have you had physiotherapy or looked into the whys of it happening. Posture, walking or sitting styles. Sciatica stems from the back and paying attention to good core strength and the best possible ways of moving can help to make attacks infrequent or vanish altogether.

I do hope something can be done about your sciatica. It's a beast of a condition

It comes and goes - when severe I need lo-dose/slow-release Morphine; when less severe I use Cocodamol as I've been advised to avoid NSAIDS after a heart problem.

Hi. I do empathise as deejames said a lot of pain medication causes stomach problems.. Personally I drink a lot of fruit juice and when necessary I take Lactulose as I find it works and isn't harsh on the stomach.

Unhelpfully, this will vary from one individual to another - and, for some people, there is no 'ideal pain control med.' that consistently works for them over time.

Physiotherapy with the pain in your back and down your legs is foul - there's no getting away from it but this is where a pain medication can take the edge off it enough to allow you to exercise and wait for it to pass.

I have bouts of sciatica that flare up when I'm having problems elsewhere (I have a scoliosis higher in the spine). The only thing that works for me is physical therapy but I know that I'm fortunate because I respond well to it.

I have recently heard some people talking about using compression socks as a way to help control the pain of sciatica. I personally have not tried it yet but I've got them on order to come from Amazon. And socks are certainly not going to make you constipated.

In my experience I am having good nerve pain control from a combination of oxycodone through out the day and duloxetine. In addition I have added high potency full plant ethanol extracted sublingual cbd oil which I take by dropper under my tongue (2-3 minutes) several times a day. Add adequate rest, at least 9 hours of sleep per night , no alcohol, limited added sugar in diet, anti inflammatory diet, stretching , aqua therapy , plenty of mineral and distilled water, fiber , physical therapy exercises, moderate walking and deep breathing. This will help but it will take the pain completely away. Each day is also different so you need to pace yourself and do not over exert. If you don't already have help with someone in your household, find good help even if you must pay for it. Don't be too concerned with constipation. That can be easily dealt with but nerve pain is worse.

Good luck.
