I am 70 years old and recently have been experiencing severe sharp pain in back of head just above neck. It radiates into head area but only lasts a few seconds.

Possibly occipital neuralgia?
I have spinal stenosis and have the same symptoms you describe. I'm in my 70's and it started 7 years ago. The pain literally takes me to my knees and I have found a foam neck collar helps when it's really bad. Be sure to have MRI or cat scan before you try any remedy though.
