Abscessed tooth

Hi all,

I had an abscessed upper molar removed last Tuesday. I was on strong penicillin for 3 weeks along with pain medication. Today the left side of my face is still so painful. I have another appointment with the dentist but was wondering if anyone has experienced this after pain.

Answer is yes!

The fact that your dentist put you on 3 weeks of ABs tells me there was a nasty infection in your tooth. Usually 7 - 10 days would suffice.

Take pain meds regularly and don't wait for the pain to kick in. So 4 hourly if thats what it says.

Remember you have an open wound in your mouth and with apologies, mouths do get a lot of rubbish in them.

Be brave but contact your dentist if at all worried.

Yes, I have had severe pain after tooth removal. In my case it was caused by "dry socket". I'm glad you are seeing the dentist - you shouldn't have to put up with that kind of pain for that long - it definitely sounds like something isn't quite right.

Discuss this with the dentist. They will have the experience to know if its worrying in your case or not.

I suspect that you have a lot of still inflamed tissue pressing on nerves in your face. So being painful is not surprising.

Go to the dentist and get them to check that the tooth gap is not infected.
