Phantom tooth pain

Had two upper back molars extracted last year. Still pain in lower molar. Dental hospital put it down to a cracked tooth and put a band round it. Finally had it extracted 5thb July but it set off all the pain again. So they decided to extract wisdom tooth. Worst mistake ever. Ended up with raging dry socket. Pressure pain in the other extraction sites. Oral specialist thinks it atypical ondontalgia and referring to a pain management clinic. Has anyone had this? Thanks in advance

This might work but I’m not sure try Sensodine toothpaste I have some pain in my back teeth and my dentist suggested to use it and it does work.

Good luck with that because I do know how teeth can hurt.

Hi I sorry your going through this , toothache is a night mare , i wonder if it could be another tooth that’s the problem sometime pain travels when we think it’s coming from one tooth it may be a tooth on top that’s causing the pain , hope you get it sorted soon

Can be a gum infection. Tissue gets inflamed and presses on nerve of tooth. Treatment water pick to clean gums and tooth. Antibiotic to reduce - remove the infection.

Oral specialist may be following guidelines which say antibiotics do not cure toothache. This is an untrue statement when the toothache is caused by inflammation in the gum pressing on a tooth nerve.

How do I know. I have had toothache caused by infected gums.

It does seem to be in gums down to the bone. Iv no teeth left on the right quadrant at all. No molars upper or lower. Wisdom tooth was extracted two wks ago. Pain ongoing since July 5th when the one in front wisdom extracted. Oral surgeon said on Friday not an oral issue now as dry socket seems to be healing and nature will take its course. So why am i still in excruciating pain and nothing relieving it. Family life suffering. Can't work. Counting the hours until Monday morning to phone private pain management consultant and go see the doctors for help as i feel so ill and can't carry on. Don't know where to turn as feel all doors are shutting. Thanks for your reply.

I am in the uk. So I am not familiar with the term oral surgeon. I deal with a dentist. Have you an infection underneath the healing extraction. Wisdom teeth have very long thin roots. The bottom of which can have got infected. The removal of the wisdom tooth does not mean that the infection at the bottom of the nerve got removed. This would not be seen at the surface which is healing nicely.

You need a second opinion from someone who knows about internal infections.

Hi John yes I'm in the UK too. I was under private dentist to have the two teeth out within the space of 3 wks. Because i was still in pain she advised i see an oral consultant/ specialist/ surgeon. This i did privately. He did a normal x ray and on Wednesday of last wk said it was an oral issue. Come Friday after speaking on phone he changed mind and said he thinks it not oral related and need to go to Pain management. I really don't know where to turn as doors keep been closed. I'm not sleeping even during the day. I'm exhausted. I just want something to take pain away. Thank you for replying

Go back to dentist and ask for a one week course of erythromycin. It is an anti- inflammatory as well as an antibiotic. If there is a small infection too small to show up on an x-ray it should destroy it. If you have an inflammatory condition it will reduce it. It has to be a dentist not a GP. A GP is not licensed to treat oral problems.

Has a bit of wisdom tooth nerve been left behind? It broke off when the tooth was being extracted.

All one can do is to try and see.
