How long does it take for ampitryptline to work. Been taking 10 mg at night for 7 days and haven't noticed much change with the burning in my shins/ legs. Thanks

You may notice pain relief as soon as two weeks after starting, but often it requires amitriptyline to be taken for six to eight weeks at the best dose level before one can say the drug has been given a fair trial. Many people stop taking the medicine because they experience side effects early on but do not feel any benefit. However, if you can persevere, you will often get tolerant to most of the side effects after a few days to weeks and you may then start noticing the benefits of the medicine.

It was 4 weeks and an increase to 50mg at night before I noticed an improvement. Stick with it. A week isn't very long for a tricyclic to kick in. Hope it works for you.

Give it at least a month, and then ask your doctor about slowly increasing it, first to 25 mg and then possibly up to 50 mg (but there is no medical evidence for amounts over 50 mg being any better for pain control). If you don't get any relief at that dose then I would give up on it as not working - though don't stop taking it suddenly. You need to taper down again as slowly as you built it up, otherwise you run the risk of mental and physical withdrawal effects.

Hi bunce I'm on 200mgs a night and they don't work for me and I have crps

At that level they are used as an anti depressant.

Strength for muscle relaxant and pain relief is usually around 100. I would check Peter why you are taking them.
