What is best medication to use for severe hip pain
Hi, very sorry to hear that you are in so much pain in your hips.
I too have suffered in this way.
I have found co-codamol from the doctor at the 30mg strength, have worked
very well indeed.
Good luck from Rhapsody.
What does the Doctor reckon the cause is, seeing as he is doling out habit forming pain-killers, surely he has some sort of strategy!?
30mg of Codeine phosphate per dose is quite enough to be addicted to when taken at the maximum recommended frequency especially over a long period... I know, I was! (Long ago moved to stronger opiates). Nothing wrong with that if it's necessary, and for a condition that is not manageable by other means, but best not to blindly use such drugs without getting to the rot of the problem - The Paracetamol in them also caused me significant liver inflammation over a period of months too.
Someone has mentioned Diclofenac, and whilst it works well for many conditions, I would not rush to take it as first choice it is associated with heart issues, and other NSAIDs might be a better option, even though they also have significant ill effects too.mhra.gov.uk/NewsCentre/Pres...
Thankyou for your remarks. I have spinal damage which has become arthritic, also arthritis in both hips, and in both hands.
my diagnosis came from the hospital after xray results. Also
I have nerve pain in both legs , I am on Gabapentin and the co-codamol is an extra to help in between the doses if the pain is still severe. I don't take them continuously only if it is unbearable.
Rhapsody.
I am surprised you are managing at such a low level then! I too have spinal osteoarthritis and hip dislocation/arthritis and it's now the better part of 20 years since I was on just Codeine Phosphate based weak opiates!
Was on Tramadol for many years, (not really very much better than Codeine based drugs, and a lot of negatives too, also a nightmare to come off!) and on to stronger opiates for more than a year, so yes there is "better." Been through Tapentadol (useless for me), Oxynorm (wears off SOOoooo quickly!) Fentanyl (didn't get on with, and patches drop off so easily) and been much better (less "ups and downs") on a lower dose (compared to the Fentanyl) of Buprenorphine patches, with Temgesic (same drug) sub-lingual tablets for breakthrough pain. I would say I suffer less side effects now than I ever did on the Codeine based drugs or the others, but I don't get pain-free, that's unrealistic, and how much sleep I can get is where I draw the line on how much I need to take! Slow release drugs in lower dose (which stop pain getting too bad) is often a better bet than doing without then needing a lot more to kill off the pain that then results.
Opiates (and that includes codeine) have had severe effects on my endocrine system over the years though, so "better" always has to be a trade-off of side effects against benefits, but that's true of any drugs for any condition.
For me, Meloxicam has been MUCH better than Ibuprofen or Diclofenac which I took for many years, it causes me far less stomach problems, without the need for acid suppressing drugs which have their own serious problems. Mind you, the damage to my kidneys *all* of those NSAIDs have done due to 30-odd years of taking them is another issue, and they are not exactly kind to the heart, but I have tried doing without them, and it serves as a reminder how effective they actually are.
Hello again, I am sorry for you .....you seem so bitter about your life.it really must be awful for you.
I wish you better luck in the future....
Regards Rhapsody
Really? I think bearing in mind the damage I have had done by Doctors, I amaze myself how cool about it I am!
What I do try to get across though - if a Doctor says it's daylight outdoors, check you watch and look out of the window... TWICE, they don't give a monkey's about you, they just do it for money!
If you think that's misguided, just go one the Thyroid part of the site and see the problems thyroid patients have in getting treated!
I guess I think myself lucky, there are people a lot worse off than me, so there is no room for me to complain.
I have the utmost respect for my doctor , and try to remember that she
isn't God.
Sorry to hear that it has been so bad for you.
Rhapsody
I actually have a pretty reasonable Doctor at the moment, one or two others at the practice are also OK, one or two rather less so.
It's not remembering that they are not God that's the hard part, it's reminding THEM that they are not God that is a lot harder!
I tend to judge by how receptive they are to possibilities and alternative options - that seems to be the arbiter of whether or not you get taken seriously and get a decent diagnosis and therefore appropriate treatment
Well you have made me smile, there is no answer to that. Good luck, and take care. Rhapsody
I had my total knee replacement this past Feb and now most of the pain in my knee is gone. Thank Gpd for small mercies! I rely a lot on my friends prayers and my own prayer to God Jehovah which really help me deal with allowing me to endure most of the pain! I am also very thankful for most days that I have something to live for!
I am highly allergic to anything that has codeine in it!
Try a sports physio, they are very good at finding and treating the cause of pain.
If you have a diagnosis, I'd recommend a TENS machine.
Ann
I would recommend BORROWING one, (from a friend, GP or Physio?) not buying one initially, as even as cheap as they are nowadays they do not work for everyone, and then at least you can find out without wasting money.
I have one, but it is very much an occasional slight stopgap whilst other drugs kick in, I find it also has zero effect the second it is turned off.
There are a number of medications but without knowing the reason for your hip pain it's difficult to advise the best one.
Is it joint? Result of back injury or what? Meantime cocodramol is very good
Pat x
Cocodramol or if the pain is really aggravating you can have your GP prescribe you morphine. peerdiagnosis.com/arthritis...
Morphine is the last srow
I am on q and parasetamol. Both do no good for my hip pain. The only option I have is hip transplant. I am 73 I feel I'm to old.
I've found codeine tablets to be very effective at pain relief. It gives this nice little relaxation, even with only 60mg.
P.S. Here is the site I use to buy my drugs: generic-meds-store.com ... they are always serious about the stuff like that. Good luck !!
