It's augmentin for three months so side effects can be experienced. Doesn't work for all low back pain.

Scientists proved about a year or so ago that most sciatica could be cured with antibiotics. They found a bug. I know no more than this but passing it on.,

its a bacteria that is usually found on the skin and is associated with acne (don't have the name to the bug handy though). the study was done by the mayo clinic, from memory the idea is that a person starts with a slipped disc but the pain continues after the original injury should have healed - this is because the bug has been able to enter the persons blood stream and has been transported to the damaged disc and surrounding tissue where it leads to an inflammatory response that causes pain- they have observed the inflammatory response by ding serial MRI's where they can measure the degree of inflammation (so i am thinking they are not the straightforward MRI's most of us think of). the idea of skin bacteria entering the blood stream and causing problems with infections around implanted artificial parts such as joint replacements has been around for a while and one portal of entry for the bacteria has been said to be via the mouth and more specifically around the teeth. not sure that what i read said that most sciatica could be explained this way but certain a significant number. but given the issues with trying to avoid antibiotic resistence issues getting worse than they already are, they will want to be sure that a person has the bacteria before they start prescribing 3 month long courses of therapy!

I am cautious about this. Is this a drug trial to promote some new treatment of benefit to the drug companies?

I have received treatment for pain in back and neck using antibiotics on several occasions. The treatment I received was effective in all cases.

The first time was about 1999, the second time 2002, the third time 2005 and the last time was December 2012.

The antibiotic used was erythromycin in all four cases.

I have heard other say similar things. I reckon - for what that's worth - that supposed external bacteria invade routinely, it's only when they become a nuisance that we notice.
