Anti sickness drugs- suffering badly with each chemo dose.

Hi, just wondered what anti sickness drugs other people have found effective to keep sickness at bay post chemo?

I'm in the middle of 6 doses of oxaliplatin and capecitabine for a recoccurance of mucinous ovca. I'm suffering badly each time being sick, nauseous for a week and retching. It's getting worse each dose and they upped the anti sickness drugs last time and prescribed them for longer but it didn't seem to help. I have ondansetron to take for the first five days and metoclopramide to take for up to two weeks plus another one that I forget the name but I think it's a steroid and referred to as "bed and breakfast".

Just wondered if there's something better out there I could try or any tips on how to get through it. I'm finding the whole thing quite difficult but prehaps what I'm experiencing is quite normal?

Dear Heffmeister

I'm really sorry to hear you're suffering so much with sickness and nausea. Have you been back to the hospital between sessions to tell them how bad it is. A friend suffered terrible sickness with her chemotherapy and she told me the hospital did respond in the end but that she'd had to be firm and insist she was given additional medication. It might be your prescription for chemotherapy could be altered.

I think everyone is different and drugs have differing effects on people. I think you've been very unlucky to have been as bad as this.

I do hope you get some help soon. This disease is bad enough without additional side-effects.

Take care. Annie xxx

Dear Heffmeister

I cannot suggest drugs as you seem to be getting the same as I did. I did have something else on my last chemo because I had developed an allergy but what I did find helped was ginger & lemon tea and a couple of dry biscuits on waking up. Using fresh ginger in cooking also helped. I still use both when i feel nauseous.

I do sympathise, had chemo 10 years ago and had appalling nausea all the time. I tried ginger etc but it barely helped me. Eventually tried travel sickness wristbands from Boots and that helped enormously. Hope it gives you relief, they are are good for all kinds of revolting nausea. Lots of love Maggiex

Oh dear! I suffered terribly from sickness on my 1st round of chemo...so much so I was carted off to hospital in an ambulance.... twice!. On my 5th chemo ,1st round someone told me about a syringe pump..what a revelation! At the end of the chemo I have a small neddle inserted into my tummy and anti sickness drugs(Nozinan) are pumped in over a 24 hour period. It's housed in a small box that I wear in a bag over my shoulder. A nurse comes in every morning and replaces the syringe. I keep it on for 5-6 days and I can go about my normal business. After it's taken off I'm fine. I'm on my 2nd round of chemo,2 so far and I'm amazed at the difference it's made. It would be worth asking about it...good luck!

Hi. I was on metoclopromide at first, it didn't work for me either. After the dose was increased, without helping, the oncology department suggested cyclazine three times a day about 30minutes to an hour before a meal also a quarter tablet of levamoprazine (nozinan) before bed (please check spellings) I saw my GP who agreed. I had already had a levamoprazine injection after being sick seven times in one day( every half hour) this stopped the nausea more or less immediately. I found if I didnt leave enough time between taking the tablet and eating symptoms came back. I was on the tablets all the time, not just for a week after chemo, this worked for me. Good luck
