Last year, My sister in law had a stoma at 80 (for bowel blockage, not due to ovarian cancer). She is doing fine with it and has refused reversal operation as she feels she can cope very well with it and it does not interfere with her life. At 75, I did have a ten hour operation to remove stage 4 oc which had spread to my stomach. They took out so many organs, including hysterectomy, I couldn't count them all, including half my stomach but, two and a half years later, I am doing fine. It did take about 6 weeks to get over the fatigue of the operation. I got up every day but did not have the energy to get dressed, which is not like me! The body has tremendous powers of recovery. You just have to give it time. Hope this helps, Emma x

Hi, my mum was 86 when she had bowel cancer & got her stoma, she loves it & says it is very convenient on trips & outings haha. My sister also has one, non cancer bowel blockage. She was 74. She's used to it now. I've had 2 big ops & although stoma wasn't necessary, it took a while to recover from each one. Actually, I don't think you ever recover completely. but the body is very resilient as long as the mind helps it to do it's job in whatever time it requires. Be patient & be very grateful to be given this opportunity to enjoy your life & the people in it. xxx
