Trapped wind!

Has anyone got any pearls of wisdom of how to get rid of this? Had for a while after my hysterectomy. Tried peppermint tea, peppermint tablets, chewing gum and of course moving around.

It’s no joke, so painful 😓

Hi. I know how painful trapped wind can be. Try fresh ginger in warm water. Or just warm water before you eat first thing in the morning. It did work for me. Good luck 🤞

i sympathise its soooo painful.. i used peppermint oil.. its strong, 2 drops in a smallglass warm water did help me… i suffered really badly after surgery… one of my nurses spent time massaging my back which was a great help xx hope it passes soon

Yuk, poor you! I tried peppermint and ginger teas, and not eating after about 8/9pm seemed to work for me … good luck hope it goes soon x

Ginger and peppermint are good but make sure your team know what you are taking first and maybe they will also have some tips for you. Don't use chewing gum as that will make you swallow more air and make matters worse. I hope you will feel better soon. xxxx

thanks I e been drinking peppermint tea. Doctor recommended chewing gum so maybe I’ve even making it worse!

Problem with chewing gum is that you swallow more air. I really feel for you and I hope the pain eases soon. I found fennel tea was very helpful but please run it by your care team before trying anything they have not recommended or prescribed. xxxx

As SKpaints1 said peppermint oil in warm water has worked several times for me too. Make sure it's the oil and not the essence.

Hi Tallulah55I had this for a few weeks after surgery and it was horrid. Peppermint water helped and I stopped drinking cold fluids as found that made things worse so drank warm lemon squash until things settled. If it goes on much longer you should talk to your GP or specialist nurse.

hi, I was advised to take a thumb sized bit of fresh ginger & add hot water & sip (also very good for nausea) Also to avoid drinking anything during meal times. Good luck x

What works for me is a fizzy drink, specifically ginger ale, sipped slowly not gulped down, and not the whole bottle, just a few sips periodically. I found peppermint utterly useless...

interesting as supposedly fizzy drinks aren’t good?

Well they're probably not if you sit and drink a can straight off... but ginger ale works well for me. Might be partially the ginger, but the fizz is essential too, just in small sips. I don't know why it works, but I just do what works, never mind what the medics say😆

My sympathies! If you can walk around that can help plus massaging stomach quite firmly.I have two stomas and wind is a frequent problem especially in middle of night.I used to get up and have peppermint tea but discovered firm massage can usually shift it around. In the daytime I try walking around plus I take Laxido to move things along.

Chewing gum will increase gas. I use an OTC medication called simethicone that does a great job by breaking down larger gas bubbles into much smaller ones which can, then, be easily expelled.

I found gentle but firm massaging of tummy in clockwise direction can help also lying on back with legs and knees together but in a v formation with your feet flat down but moved up towards your bum. Then move knees from left to right together, hard to explain but helps me. Good luck !
