trapped wind : hi I’m having my operation on 8th... - My Ovacome
trapped wind
A couple of drops of peppermint oil (H & Barrett) in boiled warm water works wonders. Not the oil essence though, must be the oil. Peppermint cordial may help too again in warm water.
They have postal service if I remember correctly.
I've just taken a look at H & B and they sell it as capsules, tea , etc the essential oil seems to be for massage, etc
See if you can get some peppermint tea bags. Sip them slowly, don’t gulp! It really helped me, post op, when I had awful trapped wind. It is painful. 😧.
Anxiety could be adding to this as when I'm anxious I swallow more air, which gives me terrible wind, heartburn and acid reflux. The pain is awful and sometimes radiates into my back. I'm struggling myself at the moment so I'm making a conscious effort to try and breathe through my nose, rather than my mouth x
that’s defo me x
Yes, old fashioned gripe water . Boots do not have it, but Lloyd's pharmacy do. I hope you feel better soon.x
Peppermint oil in water or peppermint tea bags. Take some into hospital for use after your operation. I had terrible trapped wind after my operation as bowels/intestines don’t like being handled. The relief when it was released was wonderful for me but not so great for others in the ward.
I use Infacol (simeticome) it breaks it down into smaller bubbles.
buscopan on prescription - I am not sure if you can buy it over the counter from the chemist. I usually put this down to tummy having gone into spasm or as the old song goes, “You’re as tight as a drum, Better loosen up chum, or else your drum is like to go boom, boom! “ Take for a few days.
Deflatine, you can buy them from any chemist or supermarket I think. They break it down and slowly release it descreatly. Hope you get sorted soon xx
you’ve had some good advice here but keeping yourself mobile is important and keep the intestines functioning to move wind along. Even if you are housebound.
Have a look on YouTube for yoga exercises to help bowel movement. A low fodmap diet is recommended for IBS sufferers and you might try this, it reduces foods that might lead to excess wind being produced. Wishing you all the best x
I have also found simethicone gelcaps helpful, along with sips of peppermint tea. Also, avoid drinking with a straw which can cause you to swallow more air. I would add eating a bit of fermented foods such as kimchi or sauerkraut to help your gut microbiome help control the bad bugs that cause gas. This may sound counter-intuitive, but I find a few sips of CokeZero, ginger ale, or some other carbonated beverage helps produce a good belch quickly. The trick is to just have a few sips. Drinking an entire can will worsen things considerably! Good luck with your surgery and wishing you a smooth recovery,

gas is painful! In the US, we have Gas-X pills. Do you have something similar ? They work. Also, a heating pad can help w the pain. Good luck!
Peppermint tea is very good and soothing. I use 2 bags in a mug, add boiling water and leave for 10 mins before drinking. All the best for your op on March 8th.xxx
