Borderline serous tumour stage 3b

hi everyone, I’m new to this site/forum as I’m hoping others will be in a similar situation. I had a bilateral salpingo oophectomy in July as I had 2 large ovarian cysts, when the surgery took place they found a tumour and deposits in my omentum and peritoneum, so 4 weeks ago I had a full abdominal hysterectomy and stripping of the pelvic lining. Yesterday I was told by my consultant that it is stage 3b borderline tumour which she said is a low grade cancer. To prevent or delay it recurring I have to have hormone therapy for the rest of my life, this will be an oestrogen blocker so will have ongoing menopausal symptoms, I can’t take any supplements that contain oestrogen so wondering how others are managing the menopause symptoms naturally and do the symptoms settle after a while? Any advice would be very much appreciated as I’m feeling very confused right now x

Dear Missymoo74,

Thank you very much for your post and welcome to the My Ovacome forum. I am sorry to hear how confused you are feeling at the moment. I’m sure that members of the forum community will be along soon to share their experiences.

I wanted to let you know that we have some information about the menopause on our website. I will share a link to this here if you would like to take a look: ovacome.org.uk/menopause. This includes a link to a webinar with Dr Louise Newson called ‘Managing Menopause’ which may be of interest. This talk is focussed on HRT and I appreciate that this may not be the information you are seeking, but I have included it as it may be helpful to inform discussions with your clinical team.

We also have a document available from an expert speaker about ways to manage the menopause without HRT. If you would like a copy, please do let me know and we can arrange for this to be sent to you.

Ovacome has a booklet about surgical menopause and I will put a link to this here: ovacome.org.uk/surgical-men.... We have paper copies of this booklet available and would be very happy to send you one if you would like one.

The Ovacome support service team are here if you would ever like to talk or if we can help with any information. You can contact us by calling 0800 008 7054 or by emailing support@ovacome.org.uk. All of our support services are available Monday – Friday 10am – 5pm, however, please note that our support services will be closed on Monday 19th September for the Queen’s funeral.

Please do get in touch if there is anything at all that we can help with.

Best wishes,

Cathryn

although we hear a lot about ladies with difficult menopause symptoms, and they certainly have my sympathy, please bear in mind that some lucky ladies like me and my mother have no symptoms at all and sail through. If you can , ask your mother what her experience was because I think there may be a genetic component here. My mother told me “I didn’t have any symptoms and you won’t” and she was right. I realise yours is suddenly induced but I do hope you will be lucky. Best wishes, Emma x

Hi Missymoo, I had borderline tumours on my ovaries & growth on my peritoneum, which is low grade serous stage 3 c. I have a small amount of residual disease since my op in March, but not doing Chemo. Instead I have been taking Tamoxifen hormone blocker since May.

Surgically induced menopause, plus Tamoxifen has meant menopause symptoms have hit me full on. My temperature fluctuates throughout the day between too hot and too cold, never temperate!! But night time is worse and is disrupting my sleep. I spoke to my CNS yesterday & she advised to contact the local cancer support centre as they offer therapies. I did just that and am now booked in for 4 acupuncture sessions starting next week! apparently it’s very successful in relieving hot flushes arising from hormone therapy. So fingers crossed.

In the meantime my lifesavers have been a neck fan and having cold water on hand as each flush makes me very thirsty.

Good luck. Xx

I wish I could provide knowledge; but I'm a bit clueless on borderline myself (though - I just received a preliminary diagnosis of borderline cancer from a hypodense cyst. I am 29; so going through menopause wasn't exactly what I had planned. I am curious on what others have found helpful as well! Sending positive vibes your way Missymoo.

Hello

I had peritoneal high grade serous fluid cancer diagnosed in January this year

I too was plunged into surgical menopause 6 years ago following a total hysterectomy(not cancer related) I opted not to have HRT and did experience hot flushes. I found that taking high dose sage in tablet form significantly helped- it did take a couple of months for me to notice any improvement.

If you run it by your oncologist first and are given the green light it might be worth a try.

Hoping you get some relief

Lisa
