I posted about 6 weeks ago in July following a routine scan that showed up a new (6mm) nodule in my right lung. I have now had a follow up scan which unfortunately shows that the original nodule has grown to 8mm and there is a new 6mm nodule in my left lung.
Consultant is worried and taking my case to the MDT next Tuesday. The options he mentioned were possible biopsy or PET Scan. I’m very worried. Radiology report was full of wording words such as ‘stage 4 mets’. They don’t know at the moment so it’s going to need further investigation. I was stage 3b clear cell at diagnosis following surgery.
Just wondering whether anyone has suggestions about what might be the best course of action for further investigation in these circumstances. I accept that I may just be told what has been decided but is there anything particular you would push for??
Thanks in advance for your help.

I had a lung module appear on one of my routine scans back in 2018. I went for a Pet scan and this area ‘lit up’ as active. My team then took this to the lung team and I was told they would most likely biopsy it. The lung team reviewed, and in my case, believed it could be a plug of mucus that had got stuck. I was given a high dose of steroids and antibiotics and then a rescan followed by a further one 3 months later. My results were very lucky and it had disappeared. I do hope your results are as positive. The process at my hospital was Pet scan and then biopsy so sounds the same. I wish you all the best x x x
Thank you so much for your reply. I’m hoping that’s what they will do and I will ask about this option if it’s not suggested. I’m worried because the modules are increasing and I seem well but I hope it is just some sort of low level infection. Fxx
Hi Fiona, I'm afraid I don't have much advice. However, I just read your previous post and it was interesting to read that somebody else (sorry I've forgotten her name) mentioned even though her lung nodule lit up on the PET scan it turned out it disappeared after a course of steriods/antibiotics. Her oncology team had told her that it was active (& therefore return of cancer), but when she was referred to the lung specialists they said might not be. And the good news was that it wasn't. So I guess, if it was me, if your PET scan lights up I would be asking if a lung specialist can be consulted. Hope it all works out to be nothing & some good news comes along. All the best, Ruth
Thank you so much - yes that’s a really good plan. I will definitely ask to see a lung specialist if this happens. I think a PET scan is the way to go initially. Hope they will offer this. Fxx
I had a node on my lung when I had pneumonia and onc said it might be cancer spread, I had to wait 6 weeks to find out it was infection. They always give worse possible scenario so try not to worry too much. Good luck Sue xx
Hi Sue. I guess if you had pneumonia you had some symptoms? I have absolutely no symptoms at the moment but am hoping that it’s possible I have a low Level infection that I haven’t noticed. Fxx
I have clear cell stage 3 c and chemo didn’t work for me at all. I have been on a trial fir the drug AZD 6738 for 2 yrs and 8 months so far. My tumours have reduced from total of 13.6 cm to 6.3 cm so far. I have 2 friends also on this drug and first scans showed improvement. There are 2 trials for this drug : Patriot and Atari. There is also the peacocc trial which is for immunotherapy and is for clear cell. I know that the Atari trial has been recruiting throughout Covid pandemic.
Thank you so much for your reply. Can I ask if you are braca positive? It’s my understanding that there are few options for clear cell recurrence and of those most are for people who are braca positive. I’m negative so gather things like Olaparib etc wouldn’t be offered. Fxx
As far as I understand, Atari is not for braca positive. There is test called tumor molecular testing. If the tumor has some protein deficiency based on that test, AZD6738 will be a good target medicine.
