Since having my last chemo in December last year I've had four uti infections , I had complete hysterectomy plus omementum and lymph nodes removed, ,has anyone else been plagued with the same problem , been prescribed antibiotics again ,feeling quite unwell with it today.

Hi Cheryl, I was the same , lost count of how many I have had . Was referred to a urologist who did a cystic opt . He didn’t find anything wrong. After that I’ve been much better . My GP says it could be that my urethra had been stretched by this procedure and this could have helped.

Thank you Sheila , nurse just keeps prescribing the same antibiotics ,did say if it doesn't clear up properly this time she may investigate further ,annoying because I'm really picking up ,walking every day and bit of yoga then this sets me back again. Oh well I'll just get on with it again.

Just to say , ages ago , before cancer, had a series of UTIs . This was eventually sorted but details not relevant to this query . But during the uti problems after 2 or 3 failing to clear ,they switched antibiotics with good effect . So I would ask about this . Just a thought

Thank you Jennifer , the nurse I spoke to did say I might need a broader antibiotic but prescribed the same one I've had previously ,hate over the phone consultations ,would be good to actually see a gp face to face again, thanks for your suggestion ,I'll be better prepared next time .

I was plagued with non stop uti after finishing chemo. I had 9 in the year following chemo. My gp eventually put me on low dose macrodantin for 3 months. It did the job. Have not looked back since.

Yes I went through a period of this as well. I was referred to urology and had two scopes, i I be under a GA. all came back negative. Seems to have been better again now - hope yours clear up too

Oh my goodness yes I have, I had a full hysterectomy in jan my last chemo was last August and I’ve suffered UTI ever since, they’ve told me it’s normal but I can’t see why it should be normal, they gave me some oestrogen hrt after my op as I wasn’t coping at well with the menopausal symptoms and I wondered if it was that!!! I’ve done everything they advised but I still keep getting these damn infections, it always feels like my bladder not draining properly
I was told that the urethra can be damaged during surgery and it’s a time thing but 5 months post op now
I did wonder if I'd been damaged during surgery ,I will have to see how it goes ,I'm 10 months post surgery and 6 months post chemo ,hope it settles down soon and yours ,makes me feel quite unwell.

Hello, oh dear UTI’s make you feel so poorly, you really have my sympathy. I’ve had a life-long and pre cancer history of them and investigations said due to a slightly prolapsed bladder- had surgery 30 years ago that I called my nip n tuck but they continued.
Since December I’ve had 6 and it turns out they are related to my first reoccurrence as the left ureter is affected . Had a truly dreadful one after my first infusion of carbo caelyx in May and only managed to stay out of hospital by the skin of my teeth and the quick action of my practice nurse. But what also happened following a course of nitrofurantoin that I was proscribed a low daily dose of it which I’m happy to say is working. Yay!! I feel so much better after my second infusion .
I know we are all different but is it worth asking about this? Prevention is often better than cure, and then you can get in with enjoying your life.

Thank you for replying Jan , sorry to hear you've had such problems , if these infections continue I will ask my gp about the medication you are on , I'm finding every time I feel I'm picking up from last year ,more energy ,walking further bit of yoga I get an infection and wham I'm back to square one ,such is life 😀 we just keep getting back up there ,hope you stay well .

I too struggled with UTI’s both during and post chemo, I have historically had issues here for many years anyway, they have now stopped by themselves and, touch wood, haven’t recurred in the last 5 years.
I drink lots of water, avoid fizzy drinks and drink both lemon barley and cranberry juice (the jury is out on the benefits of both drinks for UTI’s but I find them beneficial). I decided last year to stop drinking alcohol (it can adversely affect the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy according to my Prof) and I’m still fine and neuropathy symptoms are slightly reduced and still no UTI.
My Oncologist wasn’t unduly concerned during chemo re the UTI because of the toxicity and potential side effects of the chemo and he monitored me post chemo. He did mention that some people react in this way to the catheter that is inserted during surgery but that it often resolves itself but that some people need investigations into recurring UTI’s.
I hope you are able to resolve this soon, it’s really upsetting, can make us feel really poorly and this needs sorting out for your long term wellbeing.

I have had a few but thought it may be because of my splenectomy.
Hi Cheryl, yes I had ! Following my hysterectomy I was back and forward to the docs and the hospital with symptoms of a uti and like you was given antibiotics. When they did my bloods before I started chemo - twelve weeks later - they discovered my kidney function was rubbish. Turns out the surgeon had twisted one of the tubes from the kidney to the bladder and stitched the other one. I now have kidney stents which need changes roughly every three months. Hope you get sorted soon. X

I'm curious how did you react to the kidney stents? I'm due for one soon due to an obstruction which may be scar tissue around the stent. Im terrified its going to hurt a lot and with the pain I'm already dealing with plus a chronic uti, I feel I'm going in to have more torture.
Hi there, apart from a couple of uti’s I haven’t had any problems with them. I have to admit though that I don’t drink nearly as much as I should so I am my own worst enemy there. You cannot feel they are in there at all. I normally have some blood in my urine for about a day after they go in then it settles down. I don’t have to get mine changed for another year. I hope you get on ok with it. X
I did before and after surgery. I think the kidney stents made it feel e we rise but drinking litres of water seemed to help and coming off caffeine which irritates the bladder. When the stents were eventually removed it improved but still have to go when I have to go!
When we get to be allowed to travel and shop it’ll be interesting to see how public loos will cope as they’ll need to be either self cleaning or have attendants in between each user!
