Nausea 1 week after carbo taxol

Hey all,

I'm on day 7 of my first round of chemo and have been nauseous since day 4 when I finished the antiphalactic nausea meds. I took the as-needed anti-nausea meds throughout the weekend but they make me so sleepy I don't want to take them unless I really, really need them. At the moment, the nausea is manageable...I'm just wondering if it usually lasts this long.

Also...has anyone had crazy bladder pain from carbo taxol (paclitaxol)? I think it's probably just my dumb body (I have bladder issues in the past) but figured I'd ask.

Dear friend,

It does take some time to learn to manage the nausea that accompanies some chemo regimes.

I switched to a regime of Ondansetrin combined with Omeprazole first thing in the morning, than would eat a small amount of rice crispies 30 to 60 minutes later.

If I became queasy or nauseous after that I would take a Cyclazine, which is milder than Ondansetrin, but does not make you constipated.

I found that I could take 3 of these in a day and sometimes more.

They can make you sleepy the first week, but that passes.

Now your bladder is another story.

You need to talk to your CNS about this or call your Chemo Suite help line.

You may have an infection that needs to be sorted ASAP.

Don’t be afraid to consult these nurses.

They need to know your side effects.

Best wishes in your journey.

Laura

Laura, Thanks so much for your insight and reassurance. Sounds like I may need to give the Metonia more time to see if the side effects go away...But maybe I'll ask my doc about cyclazine. Did you find you had to keep this up throughout your entire chemo cycle or was there a point that the nausea actually went away? Did the nausea worsen as your treatment progressed?

The bladder thing unfortunately is not a UTI--went to the hospital over the weekend. I suspect it is probably unrelated Interstitial Cystitis based on the chronic bladder pain I had about a decade ago (which was never diagnosed), though maybe it is a side effect of pelvic floor tension or something similar from my recent hysterectomy.

Hi there, I take metoclopramide for nausea for the first 3 days as prescribed then if I need them after that. The first couple of chemo courses I felt nauseous more to do with worry of the unknown. When I explained how my tummy felt to my Oncologist, he told me it was all normal and put my mind at rest. The last course of chemo was fine, just a bit achy. As for the bladder, please speak to your nurse or unit. We don't have to suffer in silence. Best wishes to you. Jan. x.

Hi. I had nausea from day 5-11 with carbo taxol. Ondensatron doesn’t make you sleepy-just constipated. It’s important to keep the nausea under control. I was wiped out for those five days but every one is different. Is the bladder pain shooting pains? If so it’s probably the chemo but temporary.

Ugh so long! But that def sounds aligned with my experience so far. I guess I'll just hold out for a blissful week 3.

I had uterine Carcinosarcoma 6 years ago. One of my chemos was taxol. It’s one of the harshest. I had highest doses of it as well. And an emergency second round.

I have bladder pain to this day. It has gotten worse over time. When it comes it’s bad and when not there it’s good. But lately it’s there a lot and now I’m about to see a urologist. Chemo has done the usual thing of trickle down affect with health issues that for me are quite severe. Still I’m here now 6 years but now other health issues don’t seem to want to give me years any more. Still I’d do it again. But I have the bladder pain to this day. Good luck to you. Different cancers we have had but I hope you do great! Amy

Amy, I'm so sorry to hear that the bladder pain has kept up! I hope the urologist has some ideas of what might help. I've heard good things about pelvic floor physio therapy, so I think I'm going to try that and see what happens. I'm definitely glad to be getting the chemo versus potentially having a cancer recurrence down the road (knock on wood) but the chemicals sure are ugly.

Hello. I won’t repeat the sound advice from other ladies but will add that chemo one was the worst for me with nausea and it got better with each cycle. Don’t ever be a hero though and take whatever they give you. I appreciate you want to be up and about but chemo does tell you to sit down and listen to it! There’s so many anti nausea meds to be had so please speak to your nurse if one doesn’t agree with you. I did also start wearing Sea Bands from about day three which I swear helped although could also have been psychological! X

You might be dehydrated, you have to drink tons of water ,fluids or nausea stays with you. Call nurses you might be able to go in and get hydrated.best wishes, Liz

Hi. Once I had skipped my anti nausea meds at 2nd day post chemo as I didnt want to pump steroids to my shuttered body. It was a hige mistake. The nausea was so severe I was admitted to hospital and stayed overnight. I would recommend taking your all post chemo meds as suggested by doctors. Best wishes. Marta

Hey there, was just wondering how you’re doing this week? X

Hi Yorkiepudd, Thanks for asking. And thanks everyone for the advice. It's really good to hear that the nausea might improve. I assumed like everything else it got worse as treatment progressed.

I'm much better this week (and have another 9 days before my next treatment--whew!), other than being completely covered in a rash (I think from the paclitaxel?). The nausea passed around day 9, and then I went out and ate a huge bowl of vietnamese beef soup which was as good as getting injected with iron and electrolytes. I'd been drinking plenty of water, but I must have completely depleted my potassium and sodium. I went from a total zombie to a normal human being again in less than an hour! Never underestimate the power of a bone broth I guess!

I got my doc to give me a different anti-nausea med for the persistent nausea, so fingers crossed I'll be able to take it round the clock the next time around.
