Ovarian cyst very why do I need an mri

So I was initially sent for a US as i had a period that lasted 13 weeks i was passing clot s the size of my hand also had pain and nausea etc.. At the US it was confirmed i had a 10cm cyst on my left ovary and a 5cm on the right. Was reffered to a gyn who sent me for a further IS in 6 weeks and a ca125 blood test. The ca125 results came back with a count o f 13. I attended my second us and the nurse performing the ultrasound said that the cyst on my last had grown to 12cm and the one on my right had grown to 6.5 which made sense and all of my pain is on my left and also the left side of my belly is bigger than the right and my belly hangs down more on the left side than the right.

So fast-forwar d to today i met with the gyn who read out my last us results and said my 10cm cyst on the left had disappeared and a have a 10cm and a 6.5 cyst on my right ovary. I said that's impossible as the ultrasound nurse had told me something different but he is adamant they're ot h on my right he wants to do an mri exam but didn't tell !e why and wants to meet again i 2 months. I said I cant possibly wait another 2 months as the pain is awful it really hurts when I need a number 2 or when I have to pee (he said that has nothing to do with the cysts) and told him the size difference with my belly but he didn't seem to care m much. I just don't know where to turn

Hiya lovely, I know this is a really worrying time for you.

An MRI gives a really full image of what’s going on whereas an ultrasound scan is much less clear.

If the consultant wants you to have the MRI to get a complete picture I would suggest you have one, it will let you know exactly what’s happening in there and an appropriate course of action can be put together for you should you need it. Different practitioners often see differences in scans, a few years ago I had a crack in my patella which one doctor totally missed but the consultant saw it straight away it’s often down to interpretation.

It might be a good idea to seek some pain relief and also ask if the MRI can be done as soon as possible so they can see what’s causing your pain.

I hope you start to feel a little better soon and quickly get the answers you need. Good luck ❤️Xx Jane

Thank you so much lovely for responding i think you're right about the mri will give a much clearer picture i think cos it's my first one thrower mri just scared me as was worried they would find cancer.

And I didn't even think to see it from that point of view that different consultants will have diff views i did see a consultant today I haven th seen before

thanks for sharing your story with me it has give me a different mindset now

i suffer with bipolar and anxiety so my mind really goes into overdrive hahaha

thank you as i honestly feel a lil better about it all ok just take baby steps get the mri and pain relief sorted then take it from there xxx

Hi there. I'd agree with Jane. See if you can have the MRI as soon as possible, and have an experienced radiologist interprete the images. Maybe even a gyn oncologist, just to be safe. Hopefully that will trigger some swift action to relieve your symptoms. All the best. Maus

Hi is it a simple cyst or complex? I think you should consider a second opinion because you should not have to be in pain! X good luck

Hello

I completely understand what you are going through, I have just gone through a similar experience, I had a complex cyst on my right ovary, I had constant dull right sided pain, pain in my hip and pain in my legs, bloating and sickness and missed periods all of which are unusual for me. The cyst was found as I ended up in accident and emergency with 8 kidney stones that had blocked my right ureter and the ovary was also helping cause obstruction. ( picked up on 2 CT scans) I am very lucky to have private healthcare through work and saw a gynaecologist (oncologist) within days , the radiographer was also very skilled in this area of medicine as my cyst (turned out to be 2 cysts with a strip of ovary in the middle) they shrunk significantly within an 6 week period of watchful monitoring 2 TVUS and an MRI later all good, but my consultant thought the cysts has been around some months previously which explains the symptoms I had.

10cm is on the larger size and I would push for a MRI scan as soon as possible, to put your mind at rest.

If you are still having your periods it could be functional cysts which often go away in a 2-3 month period.

A lovely lady on this site gave me reference to an excellent medical article on cysts which put my mind at rest

Happy to email a copy

But take care, push to bring the MRI forward and remember a huge majority of cysts are benign
