Hi everyone. I keep meaning to ask how long after chemo did any of you colour your hair?? I’m still on Avastin but I’m not sure if that is a problem or not. I have about an inch of hair growth now and It’s just a little way to have some control over what’s happening .. 😊x

Oooh I love your colour mine is growing back dark and a mish mash of colours... x x

I coloured my hair with Nice and easy wash out after six weeks and it was fine. I have moved on to the semi permanent same make. I haven't had chemo in a while but I did colour my hair on Avastin. I do my own colouring because I am more comfortable with that

Hi Jonich I finished chemotherapy in April and on avastin my hair is about an inch long and dark brown I have a blonde wig my bio hair is actually annoying me peaking under I was thinking the same about coloring there are chemical free colours out there my hair dresser said wait about six months to put colour on scalp but not sure about highlights it depends on texture, medical team didn't comment on hair colour on avastin they just said don't microblade eyebrows,

I’ve coloured hair with off the shelf colour while on Caeylex. All ok I just felt it developed much faster. Patch test and go for it! We can’t follow all the rules! Xx

Hi Jonich. The consensus was 6 months after chemo (@ hairdressers).

I also had my eyebrows microbladed, while on Avastin! I did tell the beautician but must admit, didn’t ask the team! Lxx

I coloured my hair on avastin. I waited for about 4 months after chemo then used a box of olia on my hair. I've coloured it as normal ever since with no problems.

I guess I am in a similar situation to you.I finished my chemo in April 2018 and still on Avastin. My hairdresser said that I should wait a year after chemo before using hair dye so she is going to order me some mousse to colour my hair. I'm not sure if avastin would count though.I still have 11 treatments to go. Maybe you could check with your nurse?

I coloured my as soon as it started to grow back which was whilst I was taking Avastin.

My brother is a hair stylist so sorted it for me and my first colour was lilac which I loved!

No adverse affects at all but we did notice the my new hair took dye differently than pre-chemo.

Do not really understand why it is frowned upon and could not find any kosher research on the subject.

I'm with Flamingobeef on this one. As soon as I had enough hair to feel confident going wigless, I coloured it. I used to be dark brunette, I went blonde. Everyone utterly loves it. To my astonishment, so do I. I'm still getting that colour in. There isn't any actual research on this, do what makes you happy. xxx

I do wonder whether this “no hair dye” is actually just an “Urban Myth”?

I am very sceptical about how many Oncology Consultants have studied the subject of hair colouring and have specialised in the field of hair dressing!

Has anyone come across any validated evidence on the subject?

I was told not to colour for six months. Strangely enough, having coloured my hair for the previous forty years, l decided that I liked the silver grey hair that came through, and decided to go with it!

Hi Jonich, as I've been having the cold cap I haven't lost my hair, so I have coloured it during chemo with no problems! I colour my own hair so I just continued to do what I've always done! I have 2 more chemos yo fo, 1 every 4 weeks, and I'll probably colour my hair again in about 2 weeks! If you feel ready, then just do it! Hope this helps!xxxDawn!🌺🌺

Hi. I was advised 6 months after chemo, but only waited 5 and colored it for my birthday! Didn't like my gray/white hair after chemo. But I did find a semi permanent brand that had no ammonia as its less chemical and softer on our newly growing hair. Hugs from Australia.

My oncologist said the length of my hair was important, once it got to 1inch he said I was fine to go. Mine originally came back an awful dull grey, if it had been a nice colour I would have gone with it but I so missed my blonde so my hairdresser used very gentle products to give me a lovely gentle blonde colour 😊. There are now lots of colours in the shops that are amonia free which are really gentle, don’t forget the colour and skin test first though! Your skin may well have changed I know mine isn’t anything like it used to be. I’m now happily back to doing my own colouring. A nice hair colour is a step back to being more like the you you knew before the cancer invaded. Good luck and happy colouring. ❤️Xx Jane

Hi,

I couldn’t bear waiting 6 months. My hair grew in with tight gray/white curls, like a tight Afro.

I hated it, but after 4 months, and in this heatwave, I couldn’t stand wearing my wig any longer.

With my new curly gray hair, I did not recognise myself in the mirror, so I bought some permanent very light blonde hair dye, bought some hair product called TwistedSista to control my curls and went to town.

I still don’t look like myself, but I feel empowered by my new look.

Incidentally, my husband was totall against my dying my hair, and still has not noticed I have done it!

Go girl,

Laura

I only waited 4 months after my chemo. My hairdreser wanted to wait 6 months but I told her to just do it. I had no problems only used a tonner tho. Then bleached it up at 5 months all was good.
