I have bought some L-Glutamine after reading posts on this sight. I am not sure when to start taking it. My chemo starts on Monday. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Hi Neona, I'd suggest you check with your oncology team first, they're the best people to advise you. Good luck with your treatment, take lots of care of you, do let us know how you get on ❤xx Jane
Thanks Jane. The oncology team said they had never heard of it but I thought I would try it anyway. Perhaps I should phone the CNS. I am a guitar teacher and will not be able to play with neuropathy!
I have neuropathy in hands and feet, I play guitar, it's obviously easier without the neuropathy but I still manage well, in fact apart from being a pest it really doesn't stop me doing anything but maybe I've just got used to it now. Ireally hope the L-Glutamine works for you. Good luck with your treatment I hope you sail through it ❤xx Jane
HI Neona,
I looked into taking L-Glutamine because I will be on taxtol in 5 weeks, so I will take it a couple of weeks before hand.
I have some tingling in my big toes this was from Caelyx, so I'm hoping taking Glutamin will
help when I'm on Taxtol.
I did post if any one had good result from Glutamin and as usual the ladies on this site answered.
The advice I was given was to have it in your system before starting.
Hope all goes well with your treatment.
Cheers Lorraine xx
I would suggest checking with your oncology team. I haven't heard of L-glutamine,
Sorry, I accidentally sent my post before finishing it. I haven't heard of L-Gluramine, but was advised by my oncologist not to take any supplements while on chemo, so it might be advisable to check. Di
Hi - I did 6 cycles of carbo/taxol for stage 1c/2c clear cell. Finished November 2013 NED now and just crossing fingers ... the nutritionist on my oncologist team puts everyone on L-glutamine. I think used more here in the states but most of the women I met later on treated at other sites had never been told about it. As I recall I bought jars of the powder - it was available online - and I would take I think a tablespoon 3 times a day mixed with a bit of water. I did this all through chemo and about a month after. I did have some neuropathy anyway leading to a dose reduction after 4th chemo but like to think it helped with more severe and long lasting neuropathy. I would recommend it. No side effects and it does not interfere with chemo like other supplements can. See if there's a nutritionist who can advise you on exact dose. Good luck!
I really think it helped me when I was on taxol. I was using protein powder that had the glutamine in it and I didn't realize it. When I stopped using the powder, I started getting the neuropathy. My doctor didn't have any objections to me taking it.
At my hospital we run the supplements past the pharmacist.....worth a try?
yes-was a bit surprised the team had never heard of L-Glutamine as I have read many, many posts and articles about it.
i took glutamime 30 grams daily divided into three doses 3 days before on the day of chemo and 10 days after. little to no neuropathy.
I'm taking it but didn't know what dose and I've only just started with it as I found out after starting weekly taxol. I also take Vitamin B6 which was prescribed (after I'd asked several times) when I was on caelyx. I'm on weekly taxol now as that didn't work. I take ice with me in a cute picnic bag and ice my hands while the infusions going in. Some of the nurses are supportive of this, some curious, and I think some think that's her again reading stuff leave her to it. I don't know whether it's working but it does no harm and costs nothing so worth a try. I've read that some places supply ice packs to do this but mine says they have no freezer.
I have read about icing on american forums. How do you keep your hands frozen but avoid frostbite in your fingers. Not sure the ice would still be frozen when I reach the hospital. There doesn't seem to be any ideas at the hospitals here about prevention. I asked about frozen mits and socke but no -and they had never heard of using L-Glutamine.
I just put ice cubes in plastic bags and wrap them in an old tea towel. I take them in a little insulated picnic bag with one of those blue freezer packs. It stays cold enough even when I go in on the bus which takes an hour and a half, then another half hour while the premeds take effect, then I get my ice bags out. I take an extra towel cos I always seem to spill some of the water.
Just wanted to echo to check with your team before taking this . I recently was told to wait until after treatment to try this .!i held ice packs all the way through my carbo taxol treatment....worked a treat.. no neuropathy ! Best if luck , hugs
I presume this is to help with neuropathy? I took it and vitamin B supplement but what helped most, I believe, is that I took ice to hold to keep my hands cold.
