I was told by the pharmacist at the Marsden not to take vitamins while having chemo , she went through what I was taking (multivitamin and cranberry tablets) and said to stop them. Hope all goes well when did you start? Xxx

My oncologist said a general multivitamin would be OK, but didn't recommend anything else.

My onc is also against vitamins while on chemo because they dont mix, Post chemo I went on the chewable vitamins like gummy bears for all the world, I dont take anything now as feel I get enough from my diet. Boots skin hair and nails can be taken post chemo so I done that post Avastin as my nails were in bits.

I took loads and was fine. But you do need to watch some of the supplements about. Some general vitamins will boost and support your immune system which is vital, vitamin C etc! Vitamin D is also really crucial for cancer patients! Your GPs can prescribe this.

I also recommend taking Curcumin or a turmeric. Vital stuff and amazing for your body and it helps boost chemo in some cases but check with your Dr in case. If it is a hormonal cancer then do not take anything with phyto-oestrogen X in or synthetic hormones.

I hope this helps...

Lots of love Nicky

I took these all the way through and would not be without them. Made a huge difference to me. Basically just high strength fruit and vegetables...so all fine. They are brilliant. juiceplus.com/gb/en

A general multi-vitamin is usually acceptable, but even in general, doctors always say to try to get as much nutrients from a balanced diet as possible.

I think the main concern are antioxidants in vitamins and supplements. There's mixed reports on this, but many sources seem to indicate that it could work against the effects of chemo. So things like Vitamin C, and E, green tea, Omega-3 Fish Oil capsules, blueberries, cranberries, etc.. In small amounts it's okay, just nothing too excessive. So if you had an orange, or some salmon, I think that would be fine, but not the supplemental forms of those.

Personally, my mom took a multivitamin daily, as well as separate Calcium/Vitamin D/Magnesium capsules., and a probiotic with meals. And some days she'd have a cup of green tea. I also gave her protein shakes daily. She responded very well to chemo.

I am taking several vitamins, but was taking a few before diagnosis due to some nutritional deficiencies. I met with a nutritionist within the oncology group and got council on what to take given review of my blood work and needs. I would recommend meeting with a nutritionist experienced with cancer/chemo. this as it helps me.

Best of luck

am working with a nutritionist who also emailed my Oncologist re the supplements she has recommended I take. I'm currently taking something called Propax Gold, Milk thistle, a medicinal mushroom powder called Coriolus, Vitamin C and a Probiotic. My vitamin D levels are pretty good, so no need for a supplement to help this. Not sure if that helps you or not?

I'm on 3rd line chemo. I'm not taking any vitamins, but am taking magnesium tablets, prescribed by my oncologist, as my magnesium levels are very low. I tend to have low magnesium levels, & it goes down even further when I'm having chemo. Di

I'd get any vitamins you take reviewed by the hospital pharmacist. Mine used the same reference resource as I had! I kept taking some of mine, but knocked out most of them.

In particular some fairly recent research suggests not having fish oils and platinum based chemo at the same time.

Am taking Sanatogen Multivitamin once a day. Was recommended by my doctors in case my diet was lacking (am on a low fibre diet mostly) and have now had 13 weekly sessions of chemo and it seems to be working well judging from last scan I had at week nine - so I think a general multivitamin is safe and hopefully helpful!
