Omeprazole and Acid Reflux after Gastroscopy

I have been having digestive issues since May, lots of indigestion, acid reflux, belching etc. It comes and goes, sometimes good, sometime not, I would say I feel unwell 50% of the time. I was referred to a gastroenterologist.

I had a colonoscopy last year and all was clear. Gastro decided that I have acid reflux/GERD, but would do an upper endoscopy to check my stomach etc.

I had this on 7 October, and was told biopsies etc all clear but I have some oesphagitis. Because of this, I was prescribed omeparole 40mg for 8 weeks.

Before my gastroscopy, I was well for about 6 weeks with no probs, since the procedure, I have had the constant feeling that I have a lump in my throat, and now feel like I have something stuck. I was told by the gastro that these symptoms were acid reflux. It seems to me that the omeprazole is not working, and does feel like it has made the situation worse.

I have had to ask for a follow up appt with the gastro as they thought the tablets would fix the issue which it hasn't. This is not until end of November!

Is this normal for the omeprazole not to work at all?

I am now worrying that there is something else seriously wrong. I am being by doctors who do not have much knowledge of my history to amend my diet, but I am 56kg, do not eat spicy food nor fattening foods, so I am at a loss as how to improve the situation.

It didn't work for me either.I had to follow the Acid Reflux Diet recommended by Dr.Louise Kaufman. A complete acid elimination diet.I am also on the waiting list surgery. You could ask for assessment for fundlopication or Linx surgery.Good luck.

Hi, you said you had Gastroscopy on 7th November, was that yesterday or a year ago? If it was yesterday, you may still have a sore throat and esophagus from that.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have been on different PPI's for over 7 years unfortunately, due to acid reflux, Gastritis and Hiatal hernia. I last had an endoscopy with biopsies taken in 2019 and found my symptoms were far worse about a week after it. They went on for about a month. I am still worse now than before. I am overdue for a repeat endoscopy, but after last time it has put me off another in case everything flares up again. Anxiety can also cause swallowing problems and feeling of something stuck in the throat (Globus sensation) or it could just take a while to recover from the endoscopy. Hope it resolves soon.

Thank you very much for your reply. I definitely felt much worse after the endoscopy, wish I had never had it!! Though it has put my mind at rest that there is nothing serious going on in my stomach.

I think in my case the globus is likely caused by anxiety, it comes and goes usually, but I think feeling worse and not being able to speak to the consultant, has heightened it, and am worried that it could be something else. Or yes I could just have been irritated by the tube going down my throat.

As I do get fairly anxious, I spoke to my doctor this morning (not the consultant), who said that if I feel that bad with the Omeprazole, I can come of it for a bit and see if it does anything to help. I can always go back on it.

So I think I will just do a bit of hit and miss and see how I go until I see the consultant in 3 weeks.

Thanks for replying, when you are suffering day in day out, its good to hear about others, and how they are trying to combat it. Much appreciate the time you took to reply

as well as a bland type of diet, the Acid free or other if you prefer - very small portions may help.

Have you tried Gaviscon. It works differently from PPI s and provides a protective layer to stop the stomach contents coming back up the oesophagus. After a meal and before bed is the best time.Omeprazole just reduces levels of acid in the stomach.

The same happened with me using Lansoprazole prescribed by my GP when I first went with symptoms that I didn't recognise has acid reflux. After 7 days I started getting very bad symptoms like heartburn and a my voice got weaker and so decided to stop taking them but the new symptoms never really went away and I used Gaviscon for a month, which wasn't particularly effective. About six weeks later I had a gastroscopy which diagnosed a hiatus hernia and was prescribed Esomeprazole which has calmed things down. I have taken it for 6 weeks but intend to start coming off it shortly.
