Gastritis or metabolism

I had my gastrocopy a week ago and the results were mostly the same as the one I had in2018.Haitus hernia, gastritis and oesophegeal condition.I was confused slightly because the report said my Hernia had increased insize by 1cm -now 3 .My GP said when I asked if anything can be done to rectify it he said there is an operation but it means collapsing a lung.

My abdomen has recently become more distended and the symptoms of gastritis cause belly to be swollen and I have other symptoms of gastritis -that I have had for years-feeling full,no appetite .nausea and vomiting and acid reflux.

My Gp still insists it is my metabolism and won't confirm gastritis as the cause.I still get food sticking in my oesopheagus .

I think today my GP finally accepted that any weight gain is not diet related as I have not eaten cakes biscuits puddings or snacks for years .

he also says "there is no record of IBS in your records" but I know different because IBS has been assumed too many times when I have never presented with its symptoms. In 2022 my Gp said the gastroenterologist referred me to the dietary team for IBS dietary advice but they would not know whether I had IBs or not and my GP must have told them I had IBS.The dietary team said it was my gP that referred me to them for IBS dietary advice,.I dont know who to believe as my gp has recorded "IBS "in my records and that was last month.

He is adamant my symptoms are not those of gastritis and my swollen belly is not due to gastritis.

I still have not received an outpatients appointment to see a gastroenterologist almost 2 years on,

has anyone else's GP suggested that Metabolism is the cause for weight gain(on abdomen) and not gastritis.

Hi there sorry to hear you are experiencing those symptoms and not getting much help from your GP.Given what you have described, I would recommend working with a private dietician or Nutritionist as there could be a food intolerance causing your symptoms. A lot of people develop food intolerances as they get older so it would helpful to rule those out. Most dieticians offer a free 121 call to go through your medical history, symptoms and how they can help you so definitely worth exploring.

I would also push your GP (ask to speak to a different doctor if you don't feel like you can ask your current GP) for an ultrasound of your abdomen, this can check for things like stomach ulcers or gall stones which wouldn't be picked up by a gastroscopy. There are 100% ways to manage your symtoms even if you have a hernia. It's about addressing the root cause which I believe a dietician can help with and managing triggers which could be non-food related, stress as an example. I hope you are able to get somewhere with your GP and get some answers. X

HI Jaby86

When he first referred me to gastro's in january 2022 all that i got was aletter from a dietary team because "my gp referred me for IBS dietary advice"when I never had IBS and he denied it was him but the gastro's who made the referral.18months on and he still says it is in your records you dont have IBS but he still made an entry "elements of IBS".I have seen two endocrinologists in 2016 and 2019 nd they bith comfirmed changes to my head ,facial features ,hands and feet but not diagnose Acromegaly based on blood test.Acromegaly can be sero-negative and all my symptoms match those of Acromegaly oneof which is "weight gain around the abdomen".For over 12 years I have been telling doctors my abdomen is the reason my weight is what it is and it is not diet related .I have gastric.oesophegeal conditions that affect eating and often cannot eat yet I do not lose weight-so Acromegaly provides an explanation no doctor has provided in 12 years.

Hi there. I too was dismissed when they came to my symptoms of gastritis. For about a year now my doctor has been telling me that I'm just gaining weight since my hysterectomy. He told me to eat healthy and exercise. I just had a gastroscopy done last week with a colonoscopy. There was absolutely nothing wrong with my colon but I was diagnosed with severe gastritis. I felt vindicated and sad because it could have been dealt with a year ago. The swelling in my stomach is absolutely horrendous nothing fits me from day to day and the pain is unbearable at times. These doctors being dismissive like this is so wrong they should be held accountable for making us suffer instead of taking us seriously. I hope you have family leave I have not nothing is working.
