Nightly Stomach issues

I have had a lot of stomach issues over the years which has always been down to reflux.

But over the last year it has grown to get even worse, which often results in me feeling sick constantly, this affects sleep, the ability to go out and enjoy things and get on with life... I have been to the GP countless times and all I have been prescribed with is Prochlorperazine and Omeprazole. This doesn't do much.

When I start feeling nauseated I go into a panic and start shaking and breathing violently (no idea why but it's uncontrollable) I have also been struggling with constipation/Diarrhoea as of the past week or so as well as a loss of appetite.

Once upon a time I could eat practically everything and anything but now I am limited to toast, plain Chicken, bananas and the odd sandwich.

19, Male

has anyone else had similar issues and came to a conclusion?

I have had Gerd for 50 years.I had a severe crisis for a couple of years and was seriously ill.The acid also permanently damaged my lungs. I read Dr.Louise Kaufman's Acid Reflux Diet book which really helped-to understand the disease and to heal it through eating appropriately. I can now eat fairly normally and am much better. Drugs didn't help.It sounds as though you're having anxiety and panic attacks too.Could you afford some therapy to help with that? Huge good luck.

Hi Cmc643 Sorry to read you're feeling so rubbish. I know how it feels to go from a cast iron stomach to having to be really careful with what you eat. It is scary when you get an attack but there are some things you can do to improve things a bit. First try sleeping with your head and shoulders raised. I take Gaviscon last thing at night and it makes a kind of film on your oesophagus which can prevent stuff coming back up.

Try to do some relaxation because getting stressed about this makes it worse and you're in a vicious cycle . I'm afraid certain alcohol drinks are a no no for me especially wine. Try eating soothing stuff like Greek yogurt which I find is kind to the stomach. Its a bit counter intuitive I know but chewing chewing gum helps me too. It gets rid of the awful taste and feeling in my mouth.

An interesting thing you say is that you are constipated. I have found that if I'm constipated the reflux is worse so I started eating a high fibre diet with wholemeal bread pasta rice etc. Once I got things moving 👍😀 I felt a lot better. My doc prescribed Omeprazole for me too and I didn't find it helped. You probably have to speak to your doctor again but for me going with natural foods as much as possible has helped and I find I can manage the problem most of the time. I hope you find some answers soon.

Hard when you’re feeling so bad. I sleep on a wedge pillow(Amazon) and also take Davison just before I go to sleep. I also do a meditation before I go to sleep which I think helps(App store Zenoki Ltd, App is called Relax). I didn’t find Omperazole helpful either. Has anyone had anti depressants prescribed for gastritis? My problem is that I’m a worrier which gives me a constant tight stomach

Hi....I have been on Omeprazole 20mg in the morning for around 30 years as I had stomach ulcers on 2 occasions with HPylori on one of those......I wasn't too bad....I had the very occasional flare up but it was usually after over indulging the day before.6 weeks ago I had an ENT appointment and was told I have silent reflux. My prescription was increased to 20 mg omeprazole twice daily plus gaviscon after each meal and at bedtime. I was also advised to sleep on a wedge.

Since the increase in meds I have felt much worse. I often have bad bloating and stomach ache. I tend to start with bloating in the evening and stomach ache as soon as I wake. I am due a review at ENT but I would appreciate any help and advice ....or suggestions as to what I can say at the review.

I went o to Famotidine 40mg twice a day and just take gavis on when I need it. I actually doubled my dose of Famotidine for a few days and that seemed to help a lot, didn’t seem to have any side effects apart from a headache. I also use Nexium instead for a week or so if I feel bad and then go back to Famotidine again. Because hospital appt are so far apart I just tweak things myself to see which works best. My main thing is to try to avoid ppi s for extended periods because of long term effects

If the main problem is at night, trying Gaviscon is a really good idea

I have been taking Gaviscon for a number of years on and off, bought a liquid variant that I am going to try

Just an update for those who may or may not see, thanks for the replies and suggestions I will try them, going to go back to the GP tomorrow as I've been having discomfort/slight pain in the lower left area of the ribs which I suspect is GERD related but we shall see. Anyone else with this discomfort feel free to reply with your experiences.

Your microbiome is out of whack or you are inflamed in the lining of your stomach, try cabbage and celery juicing first to settle down the inflammation going on in your stomach. Get some Zinc carnosine helps.

Also use NOW Foods, Super Enzymes with every meal to help break down your food.

Get your stomach acid checked, most reflux issues are from low acid not high acid.

As for panic, there's a great supplement called Lithium Orotate from company called Seeking Health, comes in 5 mg, it's a great calmer down. Takes the stress out of the stomach. All natural to. When my stomach was bad my body went into stress mode as the stomach is your second brain and it affects the nervous system. I was up to 20 mg a day, now I take one every so often.

Another thing to think of is doing a parasite cleanse.

I would just like to add, Lithium Orotate should be avoided by people with thyroid disorders.

I have had similar symptoms, although I'm 64! I had lots of tests (done privately) and was advised that I had an overgrowth of bad bacteria in my stomach causing the problems. I did have a course of antibiotics (which I had to pay for privately) but also followed a low fod-map diet for six weeks. I had to avoid anything that might ferment in my stomach. I'd never felt so well while following the diet. It was tricky at first as I had to cut out all gluten and lactose, and gradually re-introduce them. The diet certainly eased my symptoms so it might be worth a try. Monash University have developed a low Fodmap diet app which was extremely useful and I also bought Tesco "free-from" food.Hope your symptoms ease soon as I know how miserable it can be.

Regards

Sally
