OCD life...

I’ve had OCD for 5 years now, it started when my older sister was in a very bad accident. It got really bad at one point - emotionally draining too! It took a lot of courage to tell my mum because there was a lot going on anyway with my sister. I don’t think she fully understood and I felt so stupid, I was only 16 so I didn’t know what to do. Since getting older, I’ve somehow learned to ‘cope’ with it. Some days are better than others. It is nowhere near as bad as it was but I still struggle. I don’t know the point of this post but this is the first time I’ve actually opened up about it other than telling my mum. Thanks for reading!

It's brave of you to take the plunge in opening up. I'm not surprised your mother didn't really understand, as few people do! It's an illness that is baffling enough for those of us who have it, let alone those who haven't! Try to be open if possible, with your mum and with others, as there should be no shame in having it, and the more we are open the more people understand. Having said that, I've been known to hide it as best I can!

There is plenty of point in your post! It's a fluctuating condition, so you can have up days and down days, or weeks, but you shouldn't have to struggle alone. Do get some professional help. It isn't a cure, but treatment with CBT can help enormously and give you the wherewithal to cope better.

Here are a couple of links that you may find useful:

Make an appointment with your GP and ask for a referral to a therapy team. Meanwhile self help books such as The OCD Workbook can introduce you to CBT and give you some exercises to work on yourself.

You were really brave to open up to your mum. As Sallyskins said a visit to the gp could help. Ocd org has an ice breaking sheet you can download for doctors incase you are nervous about telling them. CBT will really help you especially if you can do a group one
