OCD and Anafranil

Hello,

I am battling with OCD obsessive thoughts for almost a year now. I have taken several medications but since January 2018 I am taking Anafranil along with Amitriptyline. In the past 5-6 weeks the dosage is 75mg of Anafranil twice a day + 25mg of Amitriptyline twice a day too. Has anyone been on that combo? Any positive effects? It has helped me a bit but the 'thoughts' are still present and that makes me feel bad. I guess I should give it more time to work but am looking for some reassurance.

Thanks,

P.

Hi I've not been on that combo. But maybe it will take around 8 weeks to start helping and gradually you will notice a difference everyday. Don't write it off yet..keep at it. Have you been offered CBT therapy too? That helps. You can do this keep at it.. Suzie.

I know Anafranil, also known as clomipramine, well, having taken it for many years until about ten years or so ago, when I was moved onto sertraline.

My dose was for 125 mg daily. I found it very effective though it did make me feel dopey. It's one of the older medications and isn't used so much because of that, but it's still a good one and used to be a standard for OCD.

I think the problem you are having is that no medication so far has been found to defeat OCD on its own. It dampens it down considerably, but to be really effective it needs to be combined with CBT, and it actually makes you more receptive to CBT and better able to get the best from it.

Ask to be referred for CBT, or perhaps try some self-help books that use CBT. So far you have only been on the clomipramine combo for a couple of months, and it does take a good few weeks to feel the benefits of it.
