Hi I have suffered from ocd for the last 4 years . But since Sunday it as got out of control I don’t want to leave the house when anybody comes into the house I after detol everything . When my partner finishes work or my children finish school I make them get in the bath. It’s taken over. Went to doctors gave me 20mg fluoxetine and to go back in 2 weeks but doctor says can take 2-6 week to get in system. I am also on the waiting list for cbt. Can anybody suggest anything I could do in the mean time. It’s making me feel so ill and don’t want my children to see me like this

From your symptoms 20mg is a very low dosage.

If you have started flouxetine recently it will take time to show results but Try increasing your dosage by getting in touch with your doctor.

Medication does take a while before it starts to have much effect, but it should eventually make a difference. Maybe ask about upping the dose when you next speak to your doctor.

It's distressing, obviously, for you to feel you have to drag your family into your OCD, but talk to your partner about it, and explain how they can support you best. There is often a lot of pressure on family members, who don't know if they should go along with the OCD or make a stand against it. It may be more difficult to explain to the children, but perhaps you could tell them what you think they will understand, stressing that it isn't their fault and that they are not really dirty when they come in from school.

Being on a waiting list for CBT is always frustrating, but you can start putting the techniques into practice straightaway. Books such as Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder use CBT techniques and give examples and case studies, with exercises you can do. It can feel very empowering just to begin on them.

I don't know that there is a cure for OCD, but there is a way out of being controlled by it. I hope that you start to feel better soon.
