Phased return - how long before it affects your wages

I am currently on a phased return to work. Occupational Health have suggested I have my hours and they check on me each month. So far this has not affected my pay - does anyone know how long I can have on a phased return before they start docking my pay or even encourage me to leave?

I expect it varies, depending on where you work.

I went through phased returns twice without any loss of pay at all. I ended up with a reduced workload, but still on full pay.

I also got a grant from the Access to Work fund that enabled my employers to be reimbursed for me not putting in the usual full time week.

When they told me they could make no more concessions, I chose to reduce to a 0.75 part-time post and started my ill-health application.

So probably you won't lose any money. Good luck!

Not sure if it's the same where you work, but my NHS employer gives you 6 months full-pay sick leave, and 6 months at half-pay. However, once you return to work, you and your manager agree a period of rehabilitation, and the conditions of it - e.g. 1/2 time for first week, built up over 1 month, as mine was - and your pay remains unaffected.

If you can get hold of a copy of your sickness absence policy, it will be in there, or try your union rep (if you have one), or one of the occy health advisors.

Every company is different, I work for a very big company and have done for 7 years. I am only entitled to 4 weeks full sick pay at the managers discretion. So far I have had 1 months sick leave this year and only got SSP. It was agreed with my manager that I would have a phased return back to work but found I could not afford this as I live alone so I went back full time. I worry all the time about it as I lost quite a lot of money over the month that I was sick and had to dip in to my meagre savings.

Thanks for your advice - I am seeing my Occupational Health Doctor this Thursday so I will raise this issue with him to see if he can advise. I am also in the union so I will ask my rep as my sick policy does not say much about phased returns and the pay policy attached to them.

At least I know what to do next - thanks.
