Hi everyone, 8 weeks on methotrexate- RA and Fibro. Past 4 days my throat feels like something is stuck in it. It doesnt hurt- but Im a little hoarse and keep having to clear my throat . I feel like if I could just cough whatever it is in there up, Id be fine. Feels like it is down by my vocal cords- near thyroid. Feels like a small grape! Maybe its not related, but its driving me nuts! Thanks for any input!
Throat irritation: Hi everyone, 8 weeks on methotrexate... - NRAS
Throat irritation
You need to see your Gp. I saw ENT today with something similar.
Hi there, I have issues with my throat, have done since I got covid. It feels like you describe, sound quality can be terrible and it can be very sore.
I had so many tests, not much shows up.
its worse when I am anxious. They put it down to possible throat spasms, but I have found the treating for reflux ( not with meds ) has helped. And meditation and not thinking about it as much as I can.
Thyroid problems can affect your voice, as can reflux and allergies.
Fingers crossed for you that it resolves quickly. I don't think it would be the meth. Oh and RA can affect the throat as well. So it could be that.
RA can affect your throat. I've had a flare where it did and my jaw too. It did go away but maybe a call to your team to discuss?
See your GP. I have that feeling and found out I have nodules on my thyroid. I had a CT scan. I've been told not to worry they are benign and cyst like. If the feeling gets worse then I just have to see my gp again for another scan. X
You should see your GP about any condition to the throat that goes on for 4 weeks or more. Although I say this , I have not taken my own advice. The same has happened to me, since late November . I had the same symptoms, but also burping and hiccups.I thought it might be gastritis, so I took gaviscon double action which helped a bit, and changed my diet slightly to one recommended for gastritis. After ending one bottle, I tried settlers before meals. I do not like taking proton pump inhibitors. I was just about to make an appointment with my GP when thankfully the symptoms stopped. If it returns, I will make that appointment. I also read to try drinking a fizzy drink, if there is food stuck in the food pipe, as this may clear it. Good luck.
If you take oral meds make sure you take them with plenty of water.
Too little water can mean the tablets can graze your throat …& cause what you describe.
Or of course it could be acid reflux………both are easily treated…ask your rheumy nurse for help.
If you suspect acid reflux try tooth whitening chewing gum, it contains bicarbonate soda and was recommended by my TNT consultant. Who knew? But it works!
Hi Hammit 39
I used to take oral methotrexate for years before I started on methotrexate injections. I often have what I call my “methotrexate throat”. When I started taking it years ago I was always advised to see my GP as it could be indicative of a drop in your white blood cells.
I assume that you are having your bloods tested monthly?
Take care
