Hand grip

Hi, I’m interested to hear of anyone has experienced something similar.

I’ve noticed that occasionally, when I’m holding cutlery or cutting with a knife, suddenly the knife/fork will fall dramatically out of my hand without warning.

Has anyone else experienced this, especially those whose hands have got worse?

I’m seeing my consultant in a few weeks, so will ask him about it then. Starting to feel a bit down about it.

Thank you.

Hi, I experience this most days and not just with cutlery it happens with combs, pens etc anything small. My hands do close fully so therefore anything small just falls straight through them. I get so frustrated and upset as so many day to day things are becoming a struggle. X

yes I lost my grip awareness a lot at the beginning so much so I was known as the Greek plate smasher at work! The students loved watching me show them how to clear a table and lose the whole lot on the way to the kitchen!

It’s a bit better now but my grip not as tight so have to be aware of it and I know I drop things a lot

Yes I’ve had this. Lost count of the number of jars of marmite I smashed. I only buy the plastic squeezy ones now.

I also have this and am relieved to see others do to.

Everything seems to go through my fingers all the time. I do have special cutlery with thick handles. Also my hubby does the cooking now. xxx

Yes, happens quite often. I broke some dishes today, My hand just gave out as I was putting them up. Sometimes it makes my hand really hurt for a couple minutes like I slammed it with someone hard.

I get this too. Yesterday, I was returning a jar of honey to the cupboard when my grip went and the jar landed on top of a full mug of tea. Left me with one cracked mug and five minutes of wiping tea from every surface and kitchen cupboard. Very annoying!

Same for me, random and unpredictably dropping things.

yes but note my diagnosis is Stills Disease which for me manifests as rheumatoid Disease so for me it’s sporadic, one day I can hold a potato peeler but the next day I can’t hold a pen to do the crossword, it’s weird. I also have early Depuytrens Contracture (sorry about the spelling I can’t look it up and reply at the same time and brain fog prevents me mesmerising it)

Frequently. I'm a nightmare and will drop anything

And it's a yes fromme too, one minute I'm holding something, the next it is on the floor.

Yeah happens to me all the time. Not quite as bad at the moment but to start with I managed to drop pans on my feet even though they were empty thank goodness and would kind of fling things out of my hands without warning. I found compression gloves helped when it was really bad and pipe lagging was added to cutlery and pens etc so I was able to hold them. Touch wood it’s not been too bad for a while but I’ve definitely adapted my way of holding things to compensate for no grip and don’t even attempt to hold anything remotely heavy too many accidents. Better control of RA has made a bit of difference but I do have ulnar nerve issues and have done since the onset of RA.

yes I had this mainly in the early stages of my RA before the methotrexate kicked in.

I lost count of the number of dishes I broke because of it. I even had to get my hubby to cut up my food as my hands were so painful and so weak.

It only happens occasionally now as my RA seems to be well under control fortunately .

My grip is not as good as it was. I was referred to a hand physio and had a set of exercises using therapy putty to increase hand and finger strength. I was also referred to a programme 'sarah' that focuses on hand and arm exercises. I was given logon by rheumatology nurse.Link for some info. evidence.nihr.ac.uk/alert/h...

Maybe worth asking about it

Yeah. I have the same problem too.

my list of things which fly out of my hands include tv remote telephone and anything that has a smooth surface, the mad thing is I can do really fine craft work despite having a loss of feeling in my fingers

Yes drives me bonkers

Sorry to hear your frustration, you are not alone. I was recently diagnosed with RA. I never know how I am going to feel, as each day is different. I too started dropping things out of nowhere. My son even noticed the difference. It doesn't happen all of the time but enough for concern. I was told to use a squeeze ball to help keep and hopefully build strength up. It always happens when I least expect, especially when I am using a knife. I hope this helps. 🙂
