Podcast discussing contributing factors to autoimmune conditions

Hi everyone, I was listening to this episode by Dr Rangan Chatterjee - who was speaking to Dr Gabor Maté about trauma, illness and healing - and I thought it was really interesting.

In particular, later on in the programme, they were talking about autoimmune conditions and some of the contributing factors. Dr Maté points out four observations that he noticed from his time working in palliative care - I nodded for each one of these, as they are what I’ve experienced since childhood.

Wanted to share in case it might be helpful/ interesting to anyone.

Link is below - the timings are 1:36:44 - 1:41:33.

Also, he talks about why he thinks most people who have autoimmune conditions are women - 1:57:53 - 2:01:47.

I recc’d one of Maté’s books in a reply to someone on here a few months back. It’s called ‘When the Body says ‘No’’, and subtitled the Hidden Cost of Stress. It a fairly easy read, albeit emotive, and covers (with references) what we understand so far about the effect of stress, trauma, and poorly managed emotions in disease and chronic illness. Each chapter is a standalone account of a particular patient he treated and how their story reinforces the current, working theories around the link between emotional well-being and physical illness.

Went to my RA monitoring Clinic last week and told the biggest thing I needed to do for my RA was to avoid stress.
