Has anybody read the Daily Mail article on COVID vaccine

There’s an interesting article in the online Daily Mail - ‘Will the Covid vaccine protect people who had to shield? Patients with autoimmune conditions or on chemotherapy fear a weaker response to the jab. Here's what the experts say’

The Octave study has been mentioned a few times. I guess, it is not a leap to realise that a suppressed immune system will not behave in the same way as a healthy one. I think many scientists believe that CEV's will get some level of protection from the covid vaccine, but not as much as those with normal immune systems. We will have to proceed with caution until the Autumn.

For those like me who refuse to click on links to the Daily Mail here’s a link to a more reputable source if the article was about this study.

Someone gave another link to it a few days ago too.

And remember those on chemotherapy take much, much higher doses of immune suppressive drugs than we do. And even a small amount of protection will stop us dying if we catch covid, which is the most important thing.

Whatever you think of the tabloid press in general it arguably reaches a lot of people and this article in particular was informed and interesting both for the fact it promoted RA as an auto immune disease and publicised the drugs used and experiences of two sufferers: Sheila Hancock and Aisla Bosworth, NRAS founder.

Thank you for the link to the medical research. I find Behind the Headlines a really good site for checking actual research/size of samples used etc in any newspaper article nhs.uk/%2FNews%2FPages%2FNe...

but sure you’re already aware.

I’m opting for the cautious approach. I personally think there will be a new surge in cases as people start going out more. Also I am rather bored of people quoting non-medical stuff and almost ‘telling me off’ for wanting to look after myself by continuing to shield. I am fearful of ‘Long Covid’. I have severe chronic illness already, and a severely compromised life... and I really do not want it to get worse :-(

You are quite right...the answer is to look after ourselves, eat well & behave sensibly. Not throw caution to the winds just because you have had a vaccination....it is not a “get out of jail card”!

All the tests & research in the world will not protect anybody who behaves irresponsibly....so if we take responsibility as you are doing & don’t take chances by meeting people indoors & the other situations we are told to avoid......we will hopefully keep well.

I agree we have all tried hard and given up too much to abandon everything now.

Googled and found the article. Thanks for posting. Been quite a lot of discussion on this site about this already. For me it’s certainly taken the edge off the euphoria around the vaccine. Due my second jab end of April and two weeks after that will be going on a self catering holiday and eating out. Will feel I should see family indoors too. ( If I open the windows I think they’ll think I’m over reacting) But I know I’ll be worried inside (yes, come to think of it, inside myself and inside buildings!) keep telling myself that I may not have as much protection as others, but that I’ll have enough to keep alive! And somewhere in the article a scientist suggested this I think, so hold that thought!

Thank you for posting Chris: it was a really interesting article as it quoted Aisla Bosworth and actually highlighted RA as an autoimmune disease not just ‘arthritis’ unlike so much of the media (including the BBC and The Guardian in the past😳) x

Actually an accurate article from the Daily Mail - what is the world coming to? But they went to correct place to find sensible information: Ailsa!
