It’s got me at last

After all the shielding, mask wearing etc for nearly two years Covid has finally got me - on a ship in the Arctic Ocean! No chance of anti virals here but luckily so far I am not too bad. Downside is being isolated in a small cabin with no exercise facilities. Draconian measures here if you dare to catch Covid. I was negative when I got on so guess I caught it on board

Sorry to hear it finally got you - especially when you're on holiday. I hope it's only mild, that you recover quickly and are able to enjoy it 🤗

So sorry to hear this, hope things will be ok for you and you make a speedy recovery. Take care xx

I'm so sorry to hear that. I do hope you have a mild case. Oddly enough it was only yesterday that an acquaintance told me if their catching Covid on their cruise in the Med.

Oh no!!! I’m sure you’ll be ok … I love a cruise , but no way will I go on one until they drop these measures. I hope you get a refund for all the days you’re missing ! xx

HappykindaGal profile image
HappykindaGal in reply toLinaM

Drop what measures? Do you mean isolate in the cabin if you’re unwell as that applies to any illness you may have on a cruise ship and not just covid

LinaM profile image
LinaM in reply toHappykindaGal

I mean testing … if someone is actively unwell , sneezing and coughing or being sick, of course they should stay away from others. But they’re still tracking and testing on board ships . Basically they test anyone who sat near someone who tested positive… then testing them . I’m not paying for a cruise to be subjected to that.

HappykindaGal profile image
HappykindaGal in reply toLinaM

No they're not all. I've recently been on MSC and P and O and neither are testing but to be honest, perhaps they should be

Pat9442 profile image
Pat9442 in reply toLinaM

Sorry LinaM but they are not doing any tracking on this ship ( P and O Aurora) even though they say they are. Basically they test, tell you you are positive and lock you in your cabin. No exercise, food delivered and no information. It can be up to 12 days before you are allowed out

LinaM profile image
LinaM in reply toPat9442

Thanks for that information! I won’t be booking till testing is abandoned as it is onshore! It’s just not a business model they can expect to work … I’m sorry to hear your in confinement like that Pat and hope you get compensation from them . xx

I’m sorry too!. Suggest you speak to someone about the possibility of moving to a bigger cabin. Upgrade?. Might be a logistical nightmare. Hope you’re not too poorly with it.

Sorry to hear this! I’m due to go in a cruise to the canaries in October, I’m on Humira, concerned whether we should go or not.. are you on biologics??

HappykindaGal profile image
HappykindaGal in reply toPudding26

Goooo! I caught it in June on a ship. Thankfully the last day. I’m on biológics and was fine. Couple of days in bed and a stubborn cough, but apart from that it was ok.

You could just as easily catch it walking past someone outside your house

There seems to be a strange type of Covid going around at the moment ….three people I know caught it recently….all in good health …. it started with all of them during the recent really hot weather and they all fainted.

One man was taken to hospital ….. kept in overnight - tested positive sent home and was fine…..another friend also fainted …same story kept in hospital overnight & sent home …..which was quite a way from where she had been and the hospital she spent the night in contacted her local GP …and said she had to have her driving license suspended for six months in case she had had a fit…& that caused her to faint. ….so she needed to have further investigations.

Luckily her GP did a few tests & decided she didn’t need to do that, but in the meantime… she was in contact with another friend who caught the virus ….fainted in her own house - and has done herself quite a lot of damage …I don’t exactly know the details but she was kept in hospital for two or three days treating whatever damage the fall did when she fainted. But in fact all three feel fairly OK apart from a sore throat & a cough.

So if anyone who doesn’t usually faint feels a bit wobbly …..sit down fast!

HappykindaGal profile image
HappykindaGal in reply toAgedCrone

That’s interesting as when I had it in June I was dizzy

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply toHappykindaGal

Apparently all three were ‘.out’ for quite a while…the first two had someone with them- so an ambulance was called immediately…but the third person was on her own & was found…but nobody knows how long she lay there.

HappykindaGal profile image
HappykindaGal in reply toAgedCrone

Oh that was very nasty

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply toHappykindaGal

Strangely enough the same thing happened to another friend …but just pre Covid…..in 2019…..& again it was after being out in the very hot sun..…back then of course no Covid test & it was decided she did have a fit..but she had never had anything like that before…& she did lose her driving licence for six months.

I think if I faint….& survive without major injury & feel OK…I’ll do my own LFT…..& if + isolate at home very quietly until I’m -!

Recently I looked back checking the date I fell & fractured a vertebrae in early 2020…..a week after that I wrote that I had headache, sore throat & felt generally rubbish…for two weeks….so as so far I have escaped Covid…I wonder if I actually had it way back then?

But I have no antibodies…& surely I’d have them if I have had it?

Yes toczilizumab but medical centre on board know nothing about anti virals etc. water and paracetamol is their answer. Didn’t even know what CEV meant

Don’t go

in reply toPudding26

Each to their own, but this is the very reason I have not gone on a cruise. You are in a confined environment with many other people. If you do chose to go, make sure you have a cabin with a balcony so you can at least sit outside if you are ‘cabin bound’.

HappykindaGal profile image
HappykindaGal

Euurgh. Same here in June. Last day on a cruise ship too.

I think it’s inevitable that we all catch it at some point unless we wrap ourselves in cotton wool. Hope you feel better soon and hope you have a balcony 😊

Thank you .. had it in February but had antivirals.. just fear being on a cruise and no antivirals.. but need to get on and enjoy life!

So sorry to hear this Pat. I had a similar experience although at least I wasn’t stuck in a small cabin. I had shielded & been very careful since the first lockdown. We hadn’t been on holiday for 3 years & then went on holiday in May. Holidays are difficult enough with my state of health but I felt awful throughout it. I was in so much pain & just wanted to sleep all the time. The day after we came home I rang to see if I could get an appointment with a doctor. I was amazed to get one. The receptionist asked me to do a Covid test before going & I thought it seemed pointless as I hadn’t got any of the symptoms of it. However I did one & was amazed to see that I did have Covid. I was given antivirals & felt very good on them. I am now in extreme pain & wonder if it is due to Covid even though I had it 3 months ago? I hope you soon feel much better Pat. Xxx

Bad Luck! Everyone I know having been on a cruise has come back having contracted Covid during the trip. I hope your bout is mild and you recover quickly and completely. Don't try to do to much too soon or you may regress.

We caught it on holiday to Crete. They had never heard of antivirals. Confinement in room was really rubbish. I feel for you. But we weren't really poorly at all, although I got anti virals when I came home early. Know so many people with health issues for whom its been a walk in the park. Hope you feel ok and book another holiday when you get back.

Due to pain, Covid, travelling with medication and fear of losing my wheelchair, we have not been on holiday for a good few years. Last time I checked, the cost of the travel insurance was more than the holiday itself. I’m not moaning as we’ve been to some lovely places over the years including an amazing 25th wedding anniversary holiday to a very primitive Kerala in India then by seaplane to the luxurious Lakshadweep Islands. We’ve been to Greek Islands, Tunisian islands of Djerba and Kerkennah, Tobago, Canary Islands, tiny Maldivian Islands, Northern Cyprus before it became commercialised (and had white sandy beaches to ourselves) and Turkey. We always stayed away from tourist hotspots but I can honestly say you couldn’t drag me kicking and screaming onto a cruise ship. I hate the idea of being organised in any way or not being able to ‘get off’! Many of my friends can’t wait to go on their next cruise even though they’ve had all sorts of illnesses (including food poisoning and Covid) but I’m afraid it would feel like a prison ship to me. I didn’t wish to offend anyone but we can’t afford holidays (or insurance) at all. I’d very much like to know who you use for affordable holiday insurance though - just in case? 😂😂 xx

Artfanatic profile image
Artfanatic in reply toBlackwitch

Well I wouldn't say its affordable, whoever you use when you have medical issues & its doubly expensive when you're husband does too! The cost of annual cover cos my husband has several golf trips a year & some abroad is practically the cost of a cheap holiday to Spain for 1 person & it gets worse as you get older! I'm 68 & my husband is 61. We've used Staysure this year & Medical4u before. Try Saga too. I'm hoping not to catch Covid, escaped so far & shielded the last 2 lockdowns, but as I havent had a holiday abroad in 3years I've decided life is too short & so I'm taking the plunge for a Canaries holiday later in the year! Eek! I'm on Abatacept biologic & Methotrexate & I'm nervous about it all being crammed into the plane, & queuing @airport, but I'm going to take the chance & fingers X I'm ok. But I too wouldn't take a chance on a cruise, as I'd get claustrophobic locked in my room for 12days if I did get Covid & a balcony would be a must, but is the cost of a mortgage practically!!Single trip insurance is extortionate so if youre travelling even in this country, more than once a year, its worth having multi trip annual insurance even though its costly & be honest about all you're conditions so you're covered fully. Hope that helps & good luck.

I’m afraid our only ‘holidays’ are visits to our son and daughter-in-law’s. The car journey is a killer though. xx
