Amoxicillin and MTX

Hi all. You may remember my post about having a cold a little while back. Well this has developed into a chest infection and my GP had insisted I take two weeks off work even though I work from home and has advised I shield for the two weeks as well due to high covid cases in my area, which is fair enough really. But he did say I could continue to take MTX along with the amoxicillin. I have contacted the rheumy nurse to double check this as I didn’t think it was right? Can anyone advise. Currently in bed, dozing and knitting x

Sorry to hear you're unwell. Chest infections are rotten, aren't they . I suffer from them too. If I recall, I understood it was the Septrin group of antibiotics that you can't take with mtx. I've had amoxicillin several times( including for dental infections) and I seem to recall somewhere in the depths of my memory that I was told to stop mtx until I'd finished the course of antibiotics but I could be wrong. Probably best to check with your nurse to be sure.

Wishing you better soon xx

There is one type of antibiotic, trimethoprim, that you absolutely mustn’t take with methotrexate (and Septrin is in this group). Apart from that it is case by case. Depends on your overall health, the disease the antibiotic is treating, how stable your RA is etc etc. For many people the advice is to carry on, for others it is to stop. So you need to ask your own medical team who know your medical history.

I was told to stop mxt when taking antibiotics as one of them didn't work so well but I can't remember if it was the mxt or the antibiotics that didn't work well.

I had a chest infection last month and GP told me to stop Methrotrexate and Sulphasalazine until my course was finished

The advice seems to vary widely and it is not standard practice. It seems to me that if you have been on methotrexate for a while and your tissue and blood levels are stable it doesn't matter much either way! Stopping methotrexate for a couple of weeks will lower your levels slightly and increase your immune response to infection, but also increase the possibility of a flare. There doesn't seem to be any interaction between amoxycillin and methotrexate recorded.

Hi. Just spoke with my RA Nurse yesterday. I am due dental extraction and had to ask about antibiotics. Was told to stop all my RA meds ( Mtx Sulfaz and folic acid) until antibiotics are finished. Then start all meds as normal. Hope this helps. But strongly advise you check with RA Nurse

My GP, now retired unfortunately, gave me an antibiotic that was ok with mtx but for the life of me can't remember which one it was. Cleared up the chest infection within a few days.

I was on an antibiotic twice for a tummy issue, Metronidazole, my GP said there was no interaction with Mthx so I could carry on taking it.

But a few weeks ago I was given Flucloxacillin for cellulitis from a bite, and I contacted my Consultant to ask, she said not to take both together and to miss Mthx for a week.

🤷‍♀️

I’m always checking anyway, I’m a bit obsessive in that way 😂
