Well I’ve done it! Lasted half an hour in the pool with the life guard watching me like a hawk. Have not been swimming for four years. Had a shoulder replacement just before covid struck and the pool closed. Well I have joined up for a year and hope to go twice a week. Thank you all for your positive encouragement. I was very nervous going and now feel exhausted but in a good way for a change.
Have a good weekend everyone.
Chris. 🥰

Thank you I was very nervous about it but was so happy when I got in I nearly cried. Softy me used to love swimming but have not been able to for a long time. Now a new shoulder has done the trick 🙂
Oh that's so good to hear. So glad you did it, what a sense of achievement too after having your shoulder replacement. Be proud of yourself and here's to the next time. xx
Thank you! I felt quite emotional getting into the water. I was also anxious at first and a young chap was hurtling up and down but the lifeguard told him I was worried and made another lane just for him. He was delighted and I was able to pootle about 😌
I don't think we realise something which we no doubt once took for granted is so much more meaningful not only because of our health but also with this darned virus. I think it's only natural to have felt emotional. Glad the lifeguard was so helpful too and it was win win for all. xx
Thank you! I just read this and started crying! We have all missed out on positive kindness in this awful time. Hopefully we can all get on with things we took for granted and start to put our heads out of our tortoise shells once again. 🐢
Thank you! I was very worried about going and kept putting it off I used to wear contacts so I could not see, I now have a stick but they let me leave it by the poolside and the lifeguard said if I waved he would get me out so I was reassured. Now I’ve bitten the bullet I’m going back next week 🐸
I have been swimming twice a week since April love every minute. Wear earplugs and prescription goggles ( cheapish from spec savers) plod up and down verrrrry slowly.
What a good idea! I thought that was something from the film Notting Hill. I used to wear contact lenses now wear glasses and I am very short sighted so hobbling to the poolside with my stick half blind was another anxiety! So thanks for your help 😀
Thank you very much. I did fourteen lengths but it took me half an hour. The lifeguard was very kind he said he would jump in and save me if I needed it so that was reassuring . He also said that I could use pool noodles for support if I needed it. It was very exciting 🐳
I've been twice so far and managed 4 lengths the first time and 6 the second and was really proud of myself! 🤣 I'm doing one session each of Aqua Fit and Aqua Jog each week and aiming to add some swimming sessions as I get fitter - we shall see.... 🏊😂
I was just being bloody minded! The lifeguard walked along with me for the first two lengths he obviously thought I was a liability. He also made a new lane for an Olympic young man to keep him out of my way! Very kind of him I thought 😁
That's great. I'm working on not getting embarrassed by my lack of fitness 🙄 When I'm swimming I have to stop between lengths and let the others do a couple while I get my breath back and at Aqua Jog I'm always the last one to complete any exercise. Luckily I'm less concerned about looking a fool now that I'm in my 60s 😂
Not been able to visit now for eighteen months. But we are all in the same boat- or should I say plane? Hope you are able to see your family and that things will improve now we have the vaccination program 🤝
Haha on her watching the movie. I never saw it. Yes it’s a big weekend celebration but with too many drunks setting off fireworks all night for days. I’m in a state with huge drinkers, but this weekend people drink and act even more stupid.
Thank you! I felt very nervous and had visions on not being able to get out again. But the lifeguard laughed and said if all else failed they had a hoist. Managed to swim for half an hour and felt so proud 🥲
Thank you! It is the first time swimming for about five years as RAwrecked my shoulder and then after my op covid hit!Now I am bionic with a titanium shoulder I thought I might sink but I was ok but very slow 🙂
Glad you were able to get a swim in and you enjoyed it darling. I used to love swimming now it is so much hard work for me. I have to be well enough to go and i think you have to book it beforehand and i never know how i am going to feel come the time. Well done you. xxxx
They told me that I could telephone half an hour before a session to book a place as I am in a similar position to you I never know what tomorrow might bring. It might be worth enquiring for yourself too. Today I feel exhausted but in a good way. 🙂
Is that from your accident? Hope that it heals quickly for you. Care at home sell arm sleeves so you can shower in peace. I had one after my shoulder replacement surgery. A shower makes you feel human again. Take care. 😊
Well done, Chris - keep going and gradually building it up at your own pace. I hadn't swum properly since I was a teenager (I'm 65 now) but the RA put paid to my usual gym sessions and outdoor running 7 years ago. Swimming was then (and still is now) the only exercise I can do which doesn't hurt. At first, I was totally wiped out after two lengths so you did so very well to last half an hour! I very gradually got better and faster, despite long breaks from it due to RA flares, two consecutive frozen shoulders and, of course, Covid shut-downs. I can now swim a mile in the hour-long session, twice a week. It's only taken me 7 years - hahaha! I can really sympathise with you 'fighting' with your cossie - one day I couldn't get my wet cossie off because my hands were so sore - had to towel dry it off as best I could, get dressed over it and drive home. I swim in tankinis now as I find them less hassle than a one-piece.
'A tank...' - that made me chuckle!! In our 25 metre public pool, a mile is 64 and approx a third lengths, so I swim 66 lengths - might as well go to the deep end and back once I've set off on the 65th length 😀
Well, besides congratulations on your super achievement, thanks for encouraging some of the rest of us who hang back - due to fear of infection, because clinically ex. vulnerable (COPD as well as RA), simple squeamishness of those who pee in the water!! I shall ask my doctors when I see them.
