Salt water gargles worked for me as a temporary fix until I swapped to injections.

And are you on tablets? And how much folic acid? Usually the docs try increasing the folic acid first, and if that doesn’t work switch you to injections.

My husband and son suffer with major mouth ulcers seen every specialist tried everything. Bicarbonate of soda and water used as a mouth wash🤢takes away the sting. A pure liquorice sweet / pellet ( on Amazon only £ 2 for a tin) place on the start of a ulcer and swish your liquorice spit around you mouth (sorry) works for my hubby . This was tip given on another site . Didn’t believe for a minute it would work but it has worked many times.

Boy do mouth ulcers hurt

I still get a sore mouth with mtx injections, all I use is salt water as a gargle and up my folic acid as helixhelix has said.

Have had this problem sporadically since starting MTX. Best cure I have found is difflam mouthwash. I get it on prescription, and it's very effective.

Thanks everybody. At least I’ve got more options to try. I currently take 8

Mtx tablets 1 a week but I’ve had a word with my Rheumy nurse to go back to 6 and then back to 4. On my very last dose with mtx a lot of my symptoms stopped within 2 days. I just went along with what they said because I thought it better to do a full course of tablets (ie 2,4,6 and then the 8). This next I have had 1 day where I felt sick and just moped around. Thursday I felt like somebody had sucked all the energy out of me. I was totally drained. Hence my deciding to reduce the tablets. I’m a very busy person normally so I was floored to feel like this. Thanks helix for the tip about upping my folic tablets. Should I just do this or let my nurse know? My drs and nurses are so on the ball since I started this journey last December! They know when I am next going to breathe👌

I had exactly the same problems with mouth ulcers with my MTX injections. Rheumatologist increased folic acid to every day except injection day and this has sorted out the problem. Ring your Rheumatology help line for help. Good luck.

I agree with Deborah... I am on Methotrexate 15mg tablets once a week and got mouth ulcers, the hospital nurse upped my Folic Acid from twice a week 5mg to 6 days a week except on the Methotrexate day... It worked a treat..

I’m on MTX 17.5mg injection and get lots of mouth issues. I use peroxyl mouth wash and this seems to keep things under control . Available from Amazon, Boots and supermarkets. (If you do try the mouth wash you don’t gargle with it, just swish and hold it in your mouth for a couple of minutes)

Get Diflam Spray, spray it directly into the ulcer, it saves your whole mouth getting numb from it. You can also buy it in the chemist without a prescription.

Hi, I get fairly frequent mouth ulcers, even before starting MTX and have found that Gengigel is the best and quickest. You can get gel, spray and mouth rinse.

I buy it from mouthulcers.co.uk. 😊

A cotton bud dipped in TCP and held on the ulcer site is painful BUT heals the ulcer double quick - even overnight!

Thanks everybody. I’m going to try and work through some of the methods. I was in a deep sleep last night and I work up with the pain. Thankfully this is the lst one I’ve had but knowledge is power in case I get another. I might add that I am on the folic tablets every day. I’m going to try and keep busy today too. Xxx

My rheumy nurse recommended Gingigel mouthwash which I get on Amazon. Did the trick in no time.

HiI know that you have been told a variety of different things. Last year my mum had a terrible mouth ulcer, a prescription of gp worked but it came back so I bought her Aloclair spray for mouth ulcers and it worked, she hasn't had any until yesterday, so this time she's used it straight away and it's already helping her, I bought it on Amazon
