Any recommendations please on very light steam irons? I like to be independent and do as much as I can of the household chores. Ironing is challenging with crippled hands and I currently have a light cordless one but the steam function no longer works, which makes it hard going. Think i am old school as the younger generation dont iron🙃😁. Thanks

Exactly , me too , next to nothing for ironing , you can lay them against a radiator and they will iron themselves!!!!

I don't know what ironing is either! 😀

I avoid ironing as much as possible. What about an ironing service if there are things you really must have ironed? Lots of ladies round here offer to take in ironing at very reasonable rates.

Must admit that I haven't ironed anything for years - nothing to do with RA, I stopped ages before that appeared. I just give things a quick blitz in the dryer at the end.

All my friends my age still iron....seems like a dying art...lol. Will keep researching.

I use one with a steam generator, so lots of steam but iron weighs very little

A fellow ironer..yayyy! 😃. I have looked at those but some reviews said you get water drips from it. Thank you for your comment.

I use an ironing service when conditions allow because I can't stand the look of unironed things like shirts, hankies, pillowcases and teatowels. There are lots of travel irons which are very light if you'd prefer to do it yourself

Thanks but like to use steam makes it easier

Hi Evie, I didn’t realise so many people don’t iron nowadays - I need to catch up with this trend! 😂

I use a steam generator too - much lighter to handle, as the water is stored in the base unit. Mine is a Philips one, it’s my second, and I haven’t had a problem with drips so far, x

In normal times I’d say definitely go and try them out for weight in a shop but you can’t do that now. I’d weigh the one you’ve got and compare it with irons online at John Lewis, Curry’s and Argos, they all state the weight of them. Good luck 😊

Yes I know. We bought one online last week and its like a tank....we knew it was going to b a bit heavier, but I had to pick it up with two hands....used for 10 mins then put it back in its box. Cant even sell it as i dont want anyone coming to the house

Philips steam generator is the way to go ! Light and powerful iron.

I have to admit I iron very little, mostly because my hands and wrists don’t like it. However, I enjoy sewing and seams need to be pressed open. To do this I bought myself a travel iron. I’m very impressed how good a job it does and I have used it to press a few clothes. If you were doing a lot of ironing the small water tank might be a bit annoying, I keep a jug of water near by and keep topping it up.

Yes my daughter suggested that but Not man enough for duvets etc...thanks tho

I'm afraid that bedding does go in the tumble dryer but a few creases don't bother me anyway as they soon disappear once it's on the bed.I'm probably less aware of them too! 🙄😂😉

Duvet covers don't get ironed in my house. I just give them a good shake and smooth creases out with my hands before I hang them up to dry (or as soon as they come out of the tumble dryer if I use that). They don't look too bad and nobody sees them! I used to do them but decided my wrists were more important.

I'm 67 and don't iron anything unless absolutely necessary. Haven't used my iron for years, I just smooth things out a bit before I hang them up to dry and again before putting them away. I have a tumble dryer but don't often use it due to cost now I have retired, but that can help.

Dont know why i bother especially as not seeing anyone. However my wash mach spins so well t shirts get so creased....

Boxerlady profile image
Boxerlady in reply to Evie3

I have started using a lower spin speed to cut down the creases

Evie3 profile image

Mmm..tried that but clothes take ages to dry indoors and smell musty too...lol

I've used the tumble much more in the past but realised that a good blow on the line is often enough. At this time of year I hang things on airers next to radiators so I smooth them out and then, if necessary, give them a 5-minute blast in the dryer (a full load) which is enough to smooth and soften them. I'm probably being a bit optimistic but I like to think that it doesn't use much more electricity than ironing each item would 😂

I still tumble dry towels though as I haven't found any other way to keep them soft and fluffy - any advice gratefully received 😉

Recommend a Steam generator - base unit can be heavy but iron is light and will do my ironing in a quarter of the time

I am tempted to get a ‘press’ so I can sit down to do it and less fiddling around perhaps. My hands are less affected by inflammation though so it could be a press wouldn’t cut it for you. I can’t wear non iron clothes (has to be cotton) so still have to do the ironing if I can. Haven’t for the last few months but hoping too again.

Most of our clothes are cotton but my method seems to work OK....

👍🏻 that’s great to hear. My tumble drier is out of reach in an outside shed ... when these knees behave I can try that out. 🥰

Ps it’s a good job I had had the washing machine moved inside about a year and a half ago 😂

Still ironed in this household .last iron bought it had good revies about being light but to me it weighs a ton and more heavier than last one. My husbands irons all his and I do mine which are a lot less.I will invest in a philips steam generator for next one.thanks for tips

Add me to your "still ironing" group please 😉. I have one or two things that don't need ironing but everything else gets ironed. My husband does his own and we share everything else. When my hands are inflamed he will help out but mostly I leave then until I'm better.I might add that I'm a hoarder so have plenty of clothes to last me during a flare. 😂😂

I have a steamer , but one of the accessories is a clothes steamer it’s tiny and you just point it at the outfit . Obviously it won’t put creases in trousers but it does a great job

We eventually bought an all singing all dancing one.....sadly I had to pick it up with 2 hands....its now in the loft! I now have an £18 one from Sainsburys....so light, steam is ok’ish but at least I can iron without pain. I watch the telly too 😁x
