It's one of the most common reported side effects. This is my reply from your post a couple of months ago

I don't do well on 20mg side effect wise so as I’m taking folic acid 6 days my Rheumy reduced to dose to 17.5mg & added another DMARD, then another when I reacted to the first, then the second was stopped as I responded negatively to that one too. I'm still on 17.5mg monotherapy. My prednisolone was increased & when things were no better I returned to my regular dose. Not doing the best to be honest but following my last tel review I have had xrays of the joints most affected. My tel appointment has been changed to a clinic appointment so we'll see what happens next given I’ve tried all the most prescribed DMARDs.

So, what I’m basically saying is if you don't take max dose folic acid it could be that the MTX dose is just that bit too high for you to cope well with as well. An option if you're still on tablets is switching to injections, though the dose would be best reduced slightly if you do as you may still have side effects on 20mg given there's greater bioavailability in subcut. Talk to your Rheumy, that's the best thing.

You're welcome. So you're still having nausea? Did nothing help?

It started this week not really had it before , but also only been taking folic acid for 2 days so maybe as you say that maybe the cause

Bummer isn’t it , but I suppose I’d rather that than being unable to do anything

in reply toessexgirl

Yes one or two dodgy days better than a lifetime of suffering.. I’m not dramatic at all 😂

If it's the first time I wouldn't worry too much but agree with the suggestion about taking Folic Acid 6 days a week (not on Methotrexate day.)I'm on 25mg by injection and have had two days of nausia for the last few weeks which was pretty horrible. However, last week I made an extra effort to keep well hydrated and it seemed to help so I'm hoping that it will continue; interestingly, I was also less foggy-headed than usual. My usual nausia tricks are peppermint tea (and sugar-free Polos) and ginger biscuits; also eating regularly even if I don't fancy it - just toast or a banana helps.

I’m only ok if I drink a glass of water when I go to bed. I sometimes have to get up earlier to pee but I feel so much better it’s worth it!

I actually drink water in bed and I get up to pee in the night 🤪

I do for 3-4 days been on them for 5 years. Tried metojet but felt worse so back on tablets. I have asked several times if I can stop them but always told I should take them.

Can you not swap to another med? I’m on Leflunomide now after MTX jab made me feel awful for 3-4 days afterwards.

Tried them all with methotrexate but caused other problems. Taking a biologic with methotrexate and want to stop it.

I find sometimes it's the day after, and sometimes it's the day after that. I occasionally get waves of nausea during the rest of theweek too (which thankfully only tend to last an hour or so) and just occasionally I have a "good" week where I have very little nausea at all!

I'm taking folic acid 6 days a week, always take my Mtx with food and drink gallons of water so there really seems no rhyme or reason to if/when/how badly the nausea will strike.

Since the Mtx is (mostly) working as far as my RA is concerned, I really don't want to give it up and therefore have (almost) accepted that occasional nausea is the price I have to pay for keeping my RA symptoms (mostly) at bay... and most of the time, I think it's worth it ;-)

Hi, yes, I had really bad nausea for 3-4 days after my MTX jab - changed to Leflunomide now with no issues. Good luck

I too take 20mg MTX and folic acid twice a week and I feel nauseous the day after. I also feel totally wiped out! Some weeks are worse than others but you do learn to live with it. I have spoken to Rheumy and they still want me to carry on for a while. I hope you find your answer or get to a place where it is bearable.

Thankyou , I’m going to take folic acid 6 days a week to see if that helps

You are not alone in that Essex girl. That's why I make sure to take my Omaperazole first to protect my stomach and leave a gap between taking metho on 15mg as told my rheumatology nurse that was all I could take. It helped me doing that because it meant I had taken back some of the control over what I was taking.

Always but was told to take two folic acid the day before and day after my injection and this really helps then one a day rest of week and now been on it for 18 years

That's interesting - haven't heard of that. Also interesting that I'm not the only one who gets it with injections so it's not in my head! 😂

Hopefully it won't return if I keep up with the increased hydration but if it does and becomes a real problem, I might contact my rheumy nurse now that I know that it's not unheard of with the injections. 🤞👍
