Cracked corners

Hell everyone

Hope everyone are coping through Covid

I’ve been on MTX and Plaquenil for 4 years now and I constantly have a problem with the corners of my mouth cracking and being very sore. Vitamin B’s all good. All I get told is to put Vaseline on which doesn’t do much. I also take 5 mg Folic every week. Anyone else get this problem Thanks 🙂

More folic acid? If you are only on 5mg, ie I tablet, once a week?

Could be dehydration. I'd try drinking more water and see if that improves it

Hello Sylvia, I don't take any of the meds you are taking so don't know if it would be an effect, but as I understand Vasaline is really more of a barrier cream rather than something that would either soothe or heal any cracking. I get a lot of mouth ulcers with having Lupus and know they hurt. Perhaps your GP could suggest something as it must be really sore and because it's your mouth it's hard for us not to sort of aggravate it each time we eat, drink or speak. Wishing you well, take care xx

Hi Sylvia. I've been getting that in one of the corners of my mouth since being diagnosed with RA. My then rheumy doctor said the FA should take care of that but it doesn't. It's really aggravating as I plaster it in chapstick every night but it's still there in the morning. Sometimes it seems to almost heal but then comes back again.

I also find I've been getting this more regularly since being diagnosed with RA. (I take mtx, hydroxy and folic acid 3 times a week, although from comments here, I might see if I can increase the latter.)

In the meantime, I find that Blistex (formerly called Blisteze) Relief for Sore Chapped Lips can work wonders if used several times a day until the area heals. (Note: I think they also do a chapstick, which is quite possibly good too, but it's the little tube of cream which I prefer as it's more gentle on sore lips.)

Yes I did, bad too! My RA doctor had me to also take folic acid. Prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream 0.1@% for my then constant outbreaks. It's a steroid cream. But also vitamin and you need Riboflavin, otherwise known as vitamin B2. I had already found very little but one ad on the internet and it said to take riboflavins. I had been taking a B Complex but it didn't have many B's in it. I ordered B2 and take all religiously. Knock on wood, so far so good. Haven't even had to use the creme after the first time.

Do you have Sjodgrens disease? Dry mouth, eyes?

It leaves scars! I felt like I looked like the Joker. Worst part of RA. I had them constantly

No I don’t thankfully. Just the corners.

When I started to get this I asked the pharmacist if it was likely to be my medication and he said no but to try Carmax. I used it for a while but then went back to using good old Nivea and making sure that I put it on whenever my lips felt a bit dry. This coincided with my dentist telling me that RA can cause you to produce less saliva which leads to more plaque buildup and that keeping well-hydrated and sucking sugar free sweets would help; since doing that, my lips have been cracking less...

Thanks everyone. I’ll give a few of these a go. It’s so annoying

My daughter ( no RA) had this issue with the corners of her mouth and at times other areas around her mouth. and tried all sorts. She had numerous tests. It turned put to be 'oral allergy syndrome' . Basically an allergic reaction to certain fruits and shellfish (in her case). . A triggering of the immune system by certain foods . A review of her diet based on information from individual allergy tests did the trick. Food for thought ?

That’s interesting. Never thought. Thanks
