I haven’t driven for a little while but I do have ankle pain. I’m guessing it’s just a progression of the ra while waiting for meds to start doing their thing. I have told my rheumy and doc about it.

Swelling etc can effect the tendons and ligaments. I left it too long wish I had physio and orthotics sooner 🥺

If you drive a manual....if it’s possible change to an automatic....it’s a huge relief on ankles & your wrist.

I was thinking that today

Go on...break open the piggy bank.🤗

When I was first diagnosed I drove a manual and I would sit on the stairs and cry when I got indoors because my left wrist and both ankles were agony .....even if I had only driven for an hour!

In my little automatic...I can still still drive for miles without too many problems.

Hope you can get sorted.

I think that you are so right AgedCrone. I am still driving a manual car after 30 years of RD (not the same car). My left ankle (clutch) the ligaments and tendons have thoroughly broken down, I had an MRI scan a couple of years ago; it is so very painful just standing on it, but after driving sometimes I can hardly get out of the car. Having said all that I love the manual car which I think gives the left ankle some exercise. When the cars were without power steering, I would end up in tears as my hands, wrists and shoulders were so painful. Who knows, maybe I will change my mind. Take Care.

Hiya I think I will change mine to automatic as I do not drive as much as I used to because of my feet & ankles

It’s not worth the pain...but it is hard to give up a car you love!

I cried when I changed from my much loved 1999 car a couple of years ago....to another automatic....but it has no personality... & has umpteen unnecessary knobs & buttons.... I have no idea what they do .....as long as it starts when I turn the key...it can stay!

Hi essexirl, yes I have suddenly started getting it although it isn't just the inside, it's all the way round.

As is the pattern with most of my aches and pains it started with twinges over the past few weeks. I was becoming aware of occasional stiffness too and then a few days ago I was shopping with my 11 yr old daughter and really struggled to get back to the car at a sensible pace. Once we got to the car I had to remove my left shoe and rub my foot and ankle before I could drive. on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd say 9.

It has, however, passed now, there is still a bit of stiffness but today when we went back into town to get some school uniform bits it was painful around the edge of my right heel, not quite underneath. That's passed too now.

I have been getting quite a lot of twinges and sudden, short lived pains in fingers, hands and wrists while driving and that is happening more and more. I also occasionally get really nasty pain from the inside while not doing anything, just watching tv. It's so weird. All of it is so weird. I don't know what's normal and what isn't. Can I blame every little pain on RD? Is it a sign of uncontrolled illness? I sometimes get really nasty dragging pain also 9/10 in the muscle just below my elbow - I wonder if that is to do with RD.

in reply toBrychni

You have just described me to a T . In fact I emailed my nurse this week about all this as it is happening more often

Hi J1707 - I'll be interested to hear what she has to say. Remind me what meds are you taking at the moment?

in reply toBrychni

Will let you know... I’m on entanercept and MTX injections. They know I don’t suffer much pain but When i was scanned it showed so much inflammationsnd synovial fluid .Mobility and swelling along with fatigue is how my RA displays it’s self

Interesting - I had been complaining of intermittent pain for a years and then I had an ultrasound scan on my wrists - the one area where I hadn't had any pain! But that's where they found my inflammation.

My hands and wrists now have a dull, clamping kind of ache ( along with intermittent sharp stabbing pains) every day and the reason I haven't noticed it much before is that with children going back to football training, school days for my 11 yr old going up to high school, uniform buying, basically I am back behind the wheel and I am shocked by how difficult handling the steering wheel is. If it carries on like this I can see me not being able to drive. I end up driving one handed while I give the other hand a rest!

On the shopping trip when I had bad feet and ankles my elbows were bad too - well they felt achy and weak. I was carrying my handbag which is medium sized and not heavy and on the other side a shopper with a few bits from Boots and it wasn't easy carrying them. Over the years I have had pain bad enough to interfere with certain activities but now it seems to be encroaching on every day activities and I wonder where it's leading.

I'm having a chest xray on friday in readiness for methotrexate.

🤔 I think I came across much better in my email than f2f as they often interrupt my flow with questions. In my email I left nothing out . I had mentioned all these things before to consultants they just passed me to hand therapy clinic, physio and orthotics. Perhaps I detailed my problems better by email . Might be worth ago

in reply toBrychni

Ok Brychni got a reply from my nurse . She thinks most of my symptoms are caused by my medication so I’m to have a consultation ( phone 🙄) and they want to change my medication possibly to Rituximab.

Brychni profile image
Brychni in reply to

so that will mean another change of meds?

in reply toBrychni

Yep Rituximab is the one she mentioned . An infusion I believe

I know! If it's not one thing it's another. Having said that, I am not in constant pain as other RD sufferers on here. Mine are pretty bad at times but come and go and tend to migrate around my body. What medication are you taking?

in reply toBrychni

I don’t suffer with pain as such more achy but I do suffer swelling and stiffness having said that the aches are increasing with intensity I’m also suffering red hot pins and needles

Brychni profile image
Brychni in reply to

the itching that I queried the other day is, I 'm convinced to do with RD. It's become more noticeable with aching in wrists and ankles. It also feel hot, from the inside, not necesariily to the touch. Almost as if I've got sunburn.

in reply toBrychni

Snap I’m the same

in reply toBrychni

Your the only one whose symptoms are the same as mine that I have come across
