Looks like fluid to me. Can you go to A & E? You might get an answer your GP isn't giving you. Good luck.

My left ankle has been the same during lockdown over the last 3 months and now also have hip pain because of it.... not walking properly. My Rheumatology nurse has said It’s because my RA is active there and suggested a steroid injection to provide some immediate relief whilst they review my medication. As a result I will be starting biologics within the next couple of weeks.

Yes i have had hip problems as well

I too have got swelling around my ankles, on top of my feet and also further up my legs just under my knee where it looks absolutely huge but they are not painful. I have been given water tablets which make me keep passing water all morning but don't take the swelling down.

My GP says to keep my legs up and to walk?? Bit difficult to do both and I can't walk more than a few steps anyway. I have mentioned it so many times but never get any different advice. It is difficult to know what to do.

I think some gp exspect us 2 be able to just deal with it its so painfull all am told aswell is pysio will work yes i agree maybe for some maybe not all back of ankle so dam tight

I get this during a flare. Back of the ankle is your Achilles’ tendon pain could be compression due to swelling or the tendons themselves inflamed. I’ve had this for 18 months limp everyday. Having physio and now steroids as it wasn’t settling. Always thought once RA controlled it would settle. I left it too long and should have got help sooner. The pain in your hip ( I get this)could be because your holding your body differently to compensate for your ankle. I would contact your clinic and show them the photo. Steroids may help

I was thinking possiable anchillis tendon not sure what thay will do for that

in reply toManchestermum

Physio and orthotics maybe offered but you need to get the inflammation down

Achilles tendinitis is a bugger it can take a while to sort. Nsaids rest ice and heat. Physio to help strengthen the muscles around the ankles and stretch the Achilles but it won’t work while your flaring unfortunately .

Don’t be fobbed off naproxen and steroids are the best for Achilles problems according to my consultant. Let us know how you get on

My feet are like that and my hips too. My R.A. affects my knees feet and hips more than anything. It looks from the photo that you have quite a bit of inflammation or could be fluid around your ankle and it’s swollen near your Achilles too probably the reason you can’t weight bare. Try ice packs compression socks and raise your feet too ‘R.I.C.E’ method if that doesn’t work then contact your rheumy team it could be that it’s a flare. Unfortunately mine is, does it hurt to press on the hips ? Sometimes the lower back can be a problem and that’s why your hip hurts but also because you’ve changed your gait to compensate for your ankle. I would get it checked out and find out one way or the other if it’s tendonitis or inflammation or just fluid retention. A blood test would be pretty conclusive and a quick examination. Keep us posted how you get on.
