nellysgran, my illness all began in my right foot, pain across the top, swollen , red and hot. MRI showed that I have chondrocalcinosis in the foot, which mimics RA. I find rest and an ice pack helps, but do mention it to your rheumatologist.

I have this same issue & I'm seropositive with RA.. Podiatrist gave me excercises to do

- stand on step with balls of feet, and drop your heels below the step & raise again repeat five times - I do this several times a day. This is a key store thing exercise.

- get a physio band to use in the next exercise - sit with your legs in front on you on the floor and pull your feet towards you with the band & repeat 5 X

GO WALKING.

Google other excercises for this condition, they really help.

hope this helps.

Standing on a Power Plate on full blast is a help with this also. I do this in conjunction with the exercises.

I have pain on top of both feet. I can draw a line and above is very painful. All the little bones on top of foot. Rheumy sent me to podiatrist. Saw him last week and have multiple issues mainly due to RA & flat feet. He said there were 4 obvious issues. Some are machanical issues and some inflamation and extra bone growth...i think that is what he said... so have had casts taken for insoles. Pod said he couldnt cure me but could help and then that would help me become more active. Ankles etc the normal RD pain. Hope that helps

Possibly Subtalor Joint, I had to have my left one fused last June. It was so painful to walk.

Hi nellysgran,

I have this same problem and I will be going to the podiatrist on Monday. The doctor put me on Dulflonac or volteran. It helped so much better than steroids. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Yes! My left ankle has been agony for about two years (dx 1971!) and I've seen a foot surgeon but, despite ALL joints being affected, he's reluctant to give me an ankle replacement (he wouldn't offer anything else - he said I wouldn't like the result) because I'm too young - early 50's.

Did you go to a general Hospital or Orthopaedic Hospital.

It was an internationally renowned teaching hospital that basically has every department one could imagine.

A Rheumatologist suggested the ankle surgeon inject my inflammed achilles tendon but, the foot surgeon said no, it was too dangerous - can damage the tendon. I'm left with severe pain, limited mobility and pain killers, mainly codeine, until I become old enough for a replacment ankle. Reason for being too young - it only lasts for about 10 years.

The reason I asked was when I had Elbow op in Orthopaedic Hospital there was a guy who had an Ankle replacement, he was 48.

I wonder if the 48 year old had a replacement due to disease or trauma? I can understand the surgeon's point of view, they only last 10 years, potentially if I lived to average age, I would need 4! Each time it would be more difficult with less natural bone to fix to and probably not such good result.

I’ve had Achilles tendinitis and rubbed ice cubes on it to get rid of the inflammation, it worked well.
