Foot and Ankle Pain

My heel and ankle are especially painfful after any activity. Does anyone else have problems with the feet and ankles with RA? If so, what do you do to relieve pain and symptoms. I’m on methotrexate, Celebrex, folic acid, prednisone 5 mg as needed. I have spent a lot of money on shoes and inserts, with no relief. I appreciate any help I can get.

When I developed very painful feet and ankles, I saw a podiatrist. The first that I saw (on NHS) was not interested and was unhelpful and I thought unprofessional, but I saw someone privately several times who was really thorough and helped temporarily. Eventually she suggested that I saw an orthopaedic surgeon who has put screws into my feet and I have been so much better - able to walk again. Unfortunately he also said that I would need more surgery in the future and he looked forward to seeing me again! And he's probably right as I'm still getting flareups in my ankles and feet that the rheumy team don't seem interested in at all.

I get quite cross that just because it's not part of the assessment, feet are ignored.

I agree that the rheumatologists don’t seem interested in the feet. I complain about them at each visit. Thank you for your response. I will look into the orthopedic doctor.

Have you tried soaking your feet in a footbath of hot water and Epsom salts? I recently invested in a cold compress for when things get nasty. I see an NHS podiatrist who has made me some insoles, which help a bit and will be making some toe separators at my next visit as the big toe is pushing adjacent toes out of line. She also suggested I massage them with lavender oil to soothe things. I wear Birkenstocks all the time in the summer - even slippers - and they help lots. I hope this helps
